The essence of a human life consists of love - how one gives and receives it, through joy and grief, health and illness. Whether stumbling clumsily or gliding gracefully in our relationships, we grow toward one another, our lives irrevocably entwined through the love we have shared. Phil, for all his irascible, ornery demeanor, was a giver of love. We, his family, friends, and business associates, are the fortunate recipients of the love he gave us through his good heart and incredible intellect.
Born in Bakersfield, California on August 25, 1950, Phil grew up in a family of 7 children. Although he gave the schools he attended as a teen a bit of trouble, he worked his way through college and graduated with honors from Fresno State with a degree in Business/Accounting. He began his accounting career with Touche Ross & Co where he met Ginger, his “partner for life.” He became a partner at Blohm, Gilman, Lozano, & Harris, and in 1989 with Ginger, established their own accounting firm. Lozano, Lozano, & Company became a success under their careful guidance. Phil’s innate integrity, honesty, and expertise made him a trusted advisor to his clients.
Lozano, Lozano & Company was more than an accounting firm, it was a partnership of two people who shared genuine love and respect for each other. Phil and Ginger’s marriage set the tone for their firm. Their affection was apparent - a look in the eye, a dish of strawberries mid-afternoon, a walk around the building. Even in a heated discussion, they were considerate and generous towards one another. They were meant for each other like burgers and fries and happily celebrated a 40th wedding anniversary this past November.
Despite his legendary work ethic, Phil knew how to have fun. He snow skied as a young man, then later took up golf as his hobby of choice. Playing a round and relaxing with friends delighted him and kept him grounded during the endless slog of each year’s busy season.
An active, encouraging grandfather, Phil - a.k.a. “Papa” - supported and mentored his grandchildren’s efforts in school, baseball, football, and dance. He had high expectations for them, coupled with rewards for their achievements. The light in his eyes when they would burst into his office at inopportune moments would melt even the hardest heart. Never have grandchildren been so cherished.
If one’s life can be considered in accounting terms as a profit and loss statement, his was a life from which all who knew and loved him profited. Genuinely kind, honest, and full of heart, the extraordinary example he set makes the loss of his presence in our lives overwhelming.
Phil is survived by his wife, Ginger; his mother, Sophie Lozano Unkrey; his son, Paul; his daughter and son-in-law, Trish and Aaron Studt; and his grandchildren, Zack, Logan and Payton Studt; Leandra, Luke, and Ava Lozano and a Great Granddaughter “on the way”. His siblings Suzin, Stephen (Gitta) Laura and Dan (Sylvia) Lozano, Mary (Wayne) McElroy and numerous nieces, nephews and members of Ginger’s Looney family who consider Phil an important part of their family. Phil was predeceased by his dad, Joseph, and brother, Richard Lozano.
Services will be held under the direction of Whitehurst Sullivan Funeral Home.
