

Philon Panayiotis Pappas peacefully passed away in Fresno, Ca. on Sunday, July 1, 2012, at the age of 97. He was born in Plataea, Greece to a large family of brothers and sisters. He proudly served his homeland during WWII and its ensuing civil unrest. His many experiences during that time period and love of his home country were deeply etched in his memories for the remainder of his life. Philon immigrated to the United States in 1949 to assist his brother George, with the family farming operation located in Mendota, Ca. He tirelessly devoted many years of time and effort into operating the farm. He was successful growing many crops, especially cantaloupes of which he was particularly proud. He continued to take an active role in running the business until the final years of his life. Philon was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family is grateful for the legacy of example Philon set by living as a man of principles who accomplished his goals through strong will and determination. The family would like to extend their gratitude and special thanks to Linda Govea for her many years of dedicated care to Philon and his wife Mary. The family would also like to thank Francine Rios, Laura Castro, Irene, Tina, Dora, Rosario and Nila for their companionship and care. Philon was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary. He is survived by his daughter, Lena Pappas; his son, George and his wife Barbara; granddaughters, Serena, Arianna and Zoe; grandson, David Wood; and by many loving nieces and nephews who reside in Greece. Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns and Blair Funeral Home on Friday, July 6, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Fresno Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. George Memorial Fund, 2219 N. Orchard St., Fresno, Ca.
