Robert Allen Shankerman died Saturday, September 19, 2020 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno, CA at the age of 58. He was the son of Floyd Shankerman and the late Joan Kantor Shankerman. Robert is survived by his partner, Regis DeBarros, his siblings, Steven, Cindy and Jason, his nieces and nephew, Mischa Shankerman, Hannah Loewenberg and Phillip Loewenberg, and his beloved beagles, Sidney and Simon.
Robert attended Tulane University and was a member of Zeta Beta Tau. He graduated Tulane Medical School with the honor of Most Compassionate Doctor, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Robert practiced medicine for 8 years in San Diego and served as associate clinical professor of medicine at UCSD Medical School. He was a diplomat for the American Board of Internal Medicine and was certified as an HIV specialist. Rob then chose to dedicate his life to care for the underserved populations of California’s Central Valley. He went to work at Clinica Sierra Vista in 2000 in Bakersfield, CA and served as Chief Medical Officer for 10 years. He has been the Chief Medical Officer for United Health Centers for the past 6 years where he was responsible for supervising over 70 primary care doctors, PA’s and Nurse Practitioners, and the quality of care for almost 125,000 patients.
Robert loved his family dearly and was a devoted partner, son, brother, uncle and friend. He had many amazing adventures traveling the world and especially loved France, Thailand, Brazil, New Zealand, and seeing his family in Memphis. He had a lifelong love of learning and reading, cooking, and gadgets.
Robert was buried September 24, 2020 at Beth Israel Cemetery in Fresno, CA.
