Robert Tyler, a Central Valley attorney for nearly 50 years, died on September 19 in Fresno, CA. He was 74. Robert John Tyler was born in Hadley, Massachusetts on March 28, 1938, the first of three sons for Regina and Paul McClurkin. He got his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University in 1959 and received a Juris Doctor from Stanford University in 1962. He clerked for the Honorable B. Rey Schauer, a Justice on the California Supreme Court, from May 1963 to September 1964. He was offered jobs in prestigious law firms in Los Angeles, but those would have come at the expense of family life. He was lured to Fresno by Thomas, Snell, Jamison, Russell, Williamson and Asperger -- a firm that valued family time as much as billable hours. Though the name has changed – it’s now Gilmore Wood Vinnard & Magness –he practiced at the same firm his whole career, focusing on business and tax law. He was a licensed pilot and an avid skier and golfer. But he couldn’t bring himself to completely retire until a brain tumor forced him this summer. He died at home.
He is survived by his wife, Gretchen; his son, Jeff; his daughter, Beth; step-sons Jon, Bill, and Ben; his brothers, Richard and Donald and four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hinds Hospice, 1616 West Shaw Avenue, Fresno, CA 93711.
