She was born an only child on October 16, 1929 to parents Yervant and Rose Vart and grew up on a farm in Parlier. As it was at the time, she helped wherever needed growing up in their 3 person family.
Rowena received her education at Ross Grammer School and Parlier High School. She always had a musical talent playing piano and singing in various productions and occasions during these educational years and throughout her life. Those who saw her many oil paintings can attest that her talents reached even further.
When George Shaterian delivered peaches to the Vart farm to be dried from his parents’ farm in Easton, he saw her and had to meet her. He came back at a later date with his parents and the courtship began.
The two were married on September 9, 1950 and established their home on Elm Ave. in Easton where mom remained for 72 years.
Rowena worked for 2 years at Kemtron Model Railroad Co. before becoming a full-time housewife and mother. They were blessed with 3 children, George Rowen (1956), Michel Everett (1957) and Gayle Marie (1960).
Rowena was very involved in her children’s lives in her role as a stay home mom. PTA, 4H, band and sports are just a few activities that she was always there for and involved in…and of course church and Sunday School.
After these child raising years, mom got to pursue and use her musical talent in various ways and was also a part of the Fresno Women’s Chorus.
When mom and dad started attending Bethel Lutheran Church they seemed very comfortable and it was a good fit for them. As usual she became very involved and participated/contributed as she was asked and able. She had found her spiritual home and connection.
There was no match for an everyday meal and especially holiday meals that she prepared. She always included the favorites of those in attendance.
She will always be remembered as a caring, strong, talented , devoted and loving person who was there with a “Yes” for whatever was needed.
Rowena is now reunited with her parents, husband George, son Michael and daughter Gayle.
She is survived by son George and wife Kari, grandsons Rowen Michael and wife Haylie, Robert Carey and wife Alex and her great-grandsons Brady Rowen and Aaron David.
Remembrances to Bethel Lutheran Church, 187 N Broadway St, Fresno, CA 93701.
A memorial service for Rowena will be held Friday, February 10, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Stephens and Bean Funeral Chapel, 202 North Teilman, Fresno, CA 93706.
