In his youth he worked the rich farmlands of the Central Valley, where in time he would meet his future wife amidst those same fields, Ruth Velasquez. Working up from there, he became an employee at the San Joaquin Valley Housemoving Company, and through perseverance and good fortune, he eventually became the owner of that same company. For 40 years, Ruben and his son Ruben Jr. transported and set buildings all over the greater Central Valley, landmarks that still stand to this day, from school buildings to historical society museums, and everything in-between. Ruben was a lover of dance, out with his wife Ruth, both bringing home the first-place trophies to prove their dancing prowess. He was a constant presence at the various racetracks around the state, picking and watching his favorite horses come in first, second, and third. There was never a Super Bowl to be missed, or boxing match to be heavily analyzed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kayetano Hernandez and Delores Amavisca, his wife Ruth Hernandez, his son Georgie Hernandez, his daughter, Paulina Hernandez DeCheney, and 2 sisters, Connie and Dora, and 2 brothers, Robert and Raulie. He is survived by his son, Ruben Hernandez Jr. and his wife Irene Hernandez, his brother Charlie Hernandez, 6 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Alphonsus of Ligouri on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 10:30 am. Interment to follow at St. Peter Cemetery.
