Sherm -   you and Eleanor (or as my mom used to say often, Ellie) are forever a part of me.  About those cigars -miss teasing you about them and getting one at all the family gatherings off of you! Wish I could have been in Fresno saying farewell to you with your clan and having a cigar with everyone!   For now, we'll laugh and cherish te memories - we'll catch up soon enough! Your celebration of life is approaching, it’s so hard to believe how fast time passes …
Yet the memory of you NEVER fades.  You are everywhere …a missed good meal, a fantastic laugh, a trip to a casino …a funny joke , you continue to live on thru your  life’s many lessons and thru your beautiful family.  You would be so PROUD. 
Grief never ends, but it changes. It’s a passage not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith. 
It is the price of LOVE.

For me, Sherman was loving, generous, and one of the most influential teachers I have had in my life.
I first met Sherman when I was six years old. I was Joy’s first grade student and even though I was a stranger, I immediately felt like I was a part of the family. I will forever remember a night when the family went out to dinner and Robyn made me cry. Sherman picked me up and held me in his arms as if I was one of his grandkids and said, “Mean Robyn! It’s okay.” There are so many other memories I have of him when he showed his love but that one is the most memorable. 
Sherman was generous. My first job was at Louie Kee Market. Working at the store and staying with Sherman and Eleanor on weekends, holidays and summers, I saw first hand all the words people used to describe Sherman. I remember bagging groceries at eight years old or cutting lunch meat in the meat department standing on a milk crate because I was too short...by the way, that was Kevin’s idea because I remember Sherman yelling at us when he walked into the meat department. Sherman didn’t just give me my first job, he also gave me a place to stay when I continued my education at Fresno State. That’s just a few of the many memories I have of his giving character. 
Sherman was a teacher. When I was a teenager living with Sherman, I thought it would be a nice gesture to go out to the backyard to do some cleaning. I decided that the orange trees needed some loving so I started trimming his delicious orange trees. I might have trimmed off too much. I got an earful. Sherman was so upset. I thought he was going to kill me! I remember him telling me, “If you want to do something for people, ask first.” It was a very important life lesson. As a high school teacher and an advisor, I use what Sherman taught me every day.
I told my daughters that I am the person I am today because of Sherman.  He was the best role model I had growing up. I will always be thankful for the time I had with him.

Some how THANK YOU doesn’t seem to be enough.  You & mom raised 7 kids, gave us the life skills to follow our career choices, marry & raise our own kids.

Mom was usually the disciplinarian, but I remember 2 distinct times you imparted your words of wisdom....

when we started going out...
as we walked out the door you said “don’t call me from jail” 

When I went to SJSU  you said...“Don’t think you’ll go anywhere  where people won’t know the  Louie name” &  I meet someone who married into the Fung family of Fresno & a SJSU classmate of auntie Elaine’s...as usual you were right!  

You worked long & hard hours but during the summer when cousins were here, every  night after work, root beer floats, clam dip & MahJong.  Not to mention the wild ride home in the back of the pickup, you’d slam on the breaks in front of the house,  we go sliding & 1/2 of us ended up with slivers in our butt! 

Your love language was food & you shared with any one who came thur the door.  We knew if we got wonton, ox tail stew or pork roast on Sunday’s life was good. 

We were blessed you were healthy & lived independently all these years. 2020’ was rough but you always bounced back and we wouldn’t have done it any other way.  This time, your mind & will were strong, your body said otherwise. 

You are at peace now, no more  Drs appts, glucose checks, vitals, meds or denying you a large B&R chocolate shake for a small.  You & the rest of the fam are watching over us. I’m almost sure you & auntie Edna are sitting there with your own 5# box of See’s. 

You are forever in our heart & our memories are long. Your legacy will live on thur your children, grandchildren & great grandchildren.  This is not good bye...but until we meet again!!

So dad...THANK YOU!

Sherman,
Thank you for hiring my sons, Doug & Bryan during their teen years.  They earned much appreciated "gas" money.  Bryan, the wanderer, at age 13, would ride his bicycle from our W. Princeton home to the West side, Louie Kee Market (without Gladys' knowledge since she worked).  This became a ritual with Bryan so that you finally unofficially hired him prior to his 16th birthday (child labor law).  

Also you gave me a chance when I injured my back again in the mid 50's & had to quit my job as a journeyman carpenter.  You hired me so I could earn money to support my family and enabled me, simultaneously , t o attend city college.   I was able to further my education in the engineering field.  This opportunity yielded 33 years with the City of Fresno Public Works Dept as an engineering technician until my retirement in 1992

As your West side acquaintances/friends say "You have a big heart for all and helped anyone/everyone in need of a job".   You will be missed by many.

He was a blessing to the South west community. Not only was he a blessing in our hay days but also gave us credit. A blessing to the black community because he hired our youth. He was more than a icon he was diffenly a blessing.

Uncle Sherman was the highlight of any of my childhood trips to Fresno outside of visiting the family.  Visiting him at the Louie Kee Market and eating his delicious food and going through his story is a memory I won't ever forget.   He and his entire family have been close with us throughout the years and I will greatly  miss him.  I love seeing all these wonderful entries and just want to add my own.

Love to his family and everyone he has touched.  Thank you for sharing him with us from the past and will remember him and honor his memory and the spirit he brought to Fresno for years to come.

I absolutely love this man and regret not seeing him the last time I was in Fresno.  Visiting him during Christmas breaks, after all, had become one my favorite traditions.  Sherman was “family” to me and I always felt a need to see him after being away from home.
 
When I was 16 and first started working at Louie Kee I feared him but that fear quickly turned into respect, admiration and later appreciation. 
 
I respected his work ethic and business smarts.  I admired his wide range of skills and ability to connect with people from different backgrounds.  Lastly I am forever thankful that he and the Louie family played such a significant role in my life.
 
I’ll miss his great sense of humor, loud laughter, and tasty meals ... but what I will miss more than anything is the opportunity to just sit down and talk to him.  He was truly one of a kind and my prayers and thoughts are with the Louie family.

“THE MAN”, the legend has joined his lovely wife El in eternal rest. The Patriarch and Matriarch who together built a beautiful family are together again. I’m forever grateful for the daughter they raised, Robyn Louie Sanders and I join her, along with the rest of the Louie family and friends who loved him and mourn his passing.  
A beautiful tribute of a man who was so much more. Sherm lit up rooms! His smile and laughter were contagious, he was a chef who fed anyone that was hungry, a butcher, lawyer, banker, BIG BOSS, son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor, dog whisperer, gardner, therapist, duct tape contractor and the best fire cracker lighter ever! He was self taught, and he did it all, HIS way! Watching this man navigate thru life with that smile was an honor to be around. All of life’s lessons were wrapped up in Sherms head and heart. He had unconditional love for all of us, and day after day he taught us what mattered most because he did it in the way HE lived his OWN life. He was our standard and the bar was set very high...Sherm had a BARK and a LOOK that needed no explaining. If you knew him and I did, that bark came from a bigger than life heart that he carried around every day. A man who shared his life’s lessons laughs and his wisdom if you listened. I will miss my friend. Who’s going to pick up the slack Sherm? Frye our chicken, blk bean spare ribs tacos hamburgers our won tons? He leaves behind a wonderful “CREW “ who genuinely care about each other and they will continue to follow in their parents /grandparents teachings.... FAMILY is #1.  Songs will be sung and stories will be told of their great love for each other and the legacies they left behind. “What we have enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us”. 
Sherm, as I knew and loved him, was always , The Man! Always and forever. M. 

Sherman and the Louie family were such a large part of the entire Galvani family for many years.  Sherman and his parents were so good to my grandparents, and I can't remember a Friday that my grandparents were not at the market shopping and joking with Sherman.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

When I was 15 (1960), Cousins Sherman and Eleanor welcomed me  to spend an unforgettable summer with the the Louie clan. Sherman gave me my first job —in the famous Louie Kee market! where I witnessed true customer service, learned to count change (without a phone/ computer), learned to laugh with customers and was introduced to real tacos and the best fresh food and cooked dishes every night. I remember Lisa was the baby sitting in the crib and six other personality siblings made each day exciting and beautiful.  And everyone waited for “dad” to come home and after we ate he would sit in the recliner. Here he is glowing at Janelle and Joys double wedding!  RIP ♥️

Remember the good ol days with Sherman! Enjoyed calling on his store but especially enjoyed the restaurants we went to! Those days will never come back! Can’t help but thinking how great it was to live in the eighties, seventies, sixties! We miss you Sherman!!

Our sincerest condolences for your loss of a wonderful friend.  We will miss his joyfulness, kindness, generosity.   My heart and prayers goes out to you all.   May Our God lift you up in Comfort and Peace.

TO THE LOUIE FAMILY WHOM I REMEMBER QUITE WELL GROWING UP IN WEST FRESNO, YOUR FATHER/GRANDFATHER WAS WELL LOVED AND ADMIRED FOR HIS ATTENTION TO THE NEEDS OF THE POORLY DISADVANTAGE PEOPLE IN WEST FRESNO, HE ALWAYS WOULD CHAT AND WAS ALWAYS BUSY DOING SOMETHING! MAY HIS TEACHINGS AND WISDOM RESONATE IN ALL OF US!   AMEN!


Mr. Kee ( as many called him) was a community icon. What he contributed to the history of Westside of Fresno is remarkable. I had the pleasure of hanging out with his son Steven Louie, we went to  Franklin Elementary, Ft. Miller Jr. High, and Hoover High school together. I remember their green house on the corner.  I think Robyn and Lisa were too young to remember Jackie and I, but Janelle, Joy, and maybe Kevin should remember us as kids.  The Louie's, the Gee's, the Fong's, the Gin's, the Kim's, the Lee's, and the Wong's plus many others from their community are as much of the fabric of the  Westside of Fresno and Fresno history as anybody else. Shoot Louie Kee was in the middle of the "HeyDay" of the Westside. RIP Mr. Louie you will never be forgotten!

We just loved going to Louie Kee store, my father in-law got us to going there. John Weatherspoon. We never had to wait in line a long time and everyone was very professional.When  I would go back to the  meat counter he would always give me some light bulbs free for my house. I can not find the same products in any other store like you could at Louis's. He was a nice man and he and his family are sorely missed. Praying that the family be strengthed in the Lord. God Bless you all.

Prayers and Condolences to the family during this time. I grew up in West Fresno on Kern Street with my  grandmother Bobbie Jean Glover who sent us to the store every single day. I’m so grateful Louie Kee Market was conveniently located in the neighborhood.  Those were the ‘Good Ole’ days. Louie Kee Market is a childhood memory I will forever cherish. Thank you for serving our Community for generations. Rest in power Mr. Louie. 

The Carter’s family had started to go to this store when we moved here in 1959. A very special man.

Uncle Sherman was a very welcoming man from the first day I met him! I immediately felt like family in his home. You will be missed uncle RIL A HUI HOU🤙🤙🤙

No words to express the sadness with the loss of Uncle Sherman. There will never ever be another Uncle Sherman.
Will miss his laughter, sense of humor, his meals of the best wonton, love for his family. Just to name a few of the wonderful things about him.  You will never know what hard work means unless you know him. 
No doubt the entire Louie family will live on the great legacy of Uncle Sherman and Aunty El. You will never know the meaning of friendship or family unless you know the Louies.
