Stephen was born on July 24, 1951, in Fresno, California to parents William and Mary Klise. He was a caring and devoted husband to Cindy Klise, his wife of 50 years. He loved Cindy deeply and with an unwavering faith that was oft admired by others. Stephen was the proud father of two amazing daughters, Sarah Spradling and Andrea Bain, who he deeply loved and adored. He was also a loving Papa to his five grandchildren—Jameson, Ethan, Ember, Aubrey, and Connor—who made him smile whenever he saw them.
Stephen began his career with Fresno Unified School District as a janitor before transitioning to a career as a bus driver and driver trainer. With over 40 years of service, Stephen faithfully and safely transported countless students to and from school, sports and band competitions, and other extracurricular activities. His leadership and caring for others extended to his involvement in CrossCity Church, where he was a long-time member, elder, teacher, and small-group leader. Stephen loved God and his country; he was a proud patriot and committed to supporting veterans.
Stephen loved watching sports, especially NASCAR, the Dallas Cowboys, the San Francisco Giants, and the Fresno Grizzlies. He enjoyed cooking, eating, and all things food; his friends and family can attest to his famous barbecued tri-tip, rice pilaf, and bierocks. When time allowed, Stephen enjoyed slipping away to the central coast with his family to walk Pismo Beach, watch the sunset, and enjoy some good clam chowder.
Stephen is preceded in death by both parents as well as his brothers, Kenneth Reese and Buck (BJ) Reese. He is survived by his siblings, Hazel Steitz, Norma Depoyan, and Timothy Klise. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Stephen’s name to the Gary Sinise Foundation, CrossCity Church Project Fund, or Special Olympics Colorado.
A memorial service and reception to celebrate Stephen's life will be held on July 10, 2025, at 11:00 am at CrossCity Church, 2777 E Nees Ave, Fresno, CA 93720.
