Sue Oldham Hoyt, aged 75, passed away peacefully May 24, 2023. She was born on February 25, 1948 in the city of Jiangmen just northwest of Macao in Guangdong Province of China to parents Pak Jim Young and Yuey Hing Young. She arrived in the United States through the Port of San Francisco aboard the SS President Wilson at the age of 5 and quickly settled in to Fresno’s historic China Alley.
Sue graduated from Edison High School in 1966 followed by Fresno City College where she received her Associates Degree with the goal of becoming a paralegal. She later enrolled at Lyle’s Beauty College where she received her beautician’s license followed by working for Lily’s Salon as a beautician. Later in her career, she went on to work for Equitable Insurance and after that she proudly worked for 17 years up to her retirement for California State University Fresno as the administrative assistant for the Dean of Engineering.
Sue’s main love however was being a mother to her children and spent many years being a full time stay at home mom while working as a beautician on the side for valued friends and family (which she continued doing in more limited capacity all the way until her passing). She also was an amazingly talented seamstress with an eye for quality that only comes with patience and an artistic touch whether that be in creating costumes or sewing her daughters’ dresses for prom with just a description of what they wanted.
Sue could cook! She was famous for her fried rice, egg rolls with special peanut sauce, deviled eggs, Mississippi mud pie, broccoli cheese, beef roast and more. These were staples at any potluck, dinner, or celebration.
But most of all, Sue loved her family and especially her “babies.” Sue will be greatly missed every day by her devoted husband Joe Hoyt, her children Cheryl Oldham, Darryl Oldham (and spouse Shamaen Oldham), Jennifer Chmielewski (and spouse Chris Chmielewski), and Michael Oldham (and spouse Sarah Jack Oldham), all her grandbabies Christian Rodriguez, Kristina Rodriguez, Amanda Dellandre, Jack Dellandre, Zachary Oldham, Jacob Oldham, Nathaniel Oldham, Gabriel Oldham, Samuel Chmielewski and William “Willie Willie” Chmielewski, her great granddaughter Camilla Rae Rodriguez as well as her siblings and in-laws Thomas Young, Joyce Young, Peter Young, June Stolan, John Stolan and numerous nieces/nephews/grandnieces/grandnephews and cousins.
Sue was always loving, kind, funny and fun! She never took herself seriously and loved to dance! Her family would ask that in the upcoming weeks you please consider having your own dance party in her honor.
Please join in celebrating her life on June 10, 2023 at 10:00 am at First Chinese Baptist Church of Fresno located at 6080 N Angus, Fresno, CA 93710. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to First Chinese Baptist Church at the address above or fcbcfresno.org or to Martin Park at Martinpark.org, a ministry Sue was happy to help in the years before her passing.
