Thomas “Tom” DeFreitas, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and faithful follower of Jesus Christ, went home to be with the Lord on September 30, 2025.
Tom DeFreitas was the beloved husband to Kathy DeFreitas, who he shared 52 years of love, laughter, and marriage with. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and deep mutual respect.
He was a proud and devoted father to Helena Mirelez (married to Arthur) and Caleb DeFreitas (married to Sommer), and a cherished "Poppy" to his adoring grandchildren: Mia, Ava, Ella, Sophia, CJ, and Cooper. He followed their sporting endeavours with pride and joy, always their biggest fan, and would be found filming TikTok’s under their direction or dancing with them whenever there was music, whether in a restaurant, parking lot or at home.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Helen DeFreitas, whose example of faith and love profoundly shaped the man he became. He is survived by his brother Dennis DeFreitas.
A man of unwavering faith, Tom lived each day with gratitude, humility, and a heart full of compassion. He never hesitated to share his love for Jesus Christ and his life reflected that love—marked by kindness and generosity. Recently, on the way to medical treatment he said to Kathy “You know what, either way I win!” referring to his home in heaven or his home on earth.
Born and raised in Caruthers, Tom played football for the Blue Raiders and showed cattle with the FFA, earning his American Farmer Degree. This helped lay early foundations for an enduring work ethic, competitive spirit, and love for community.
Tom had a zest for life and a genuine love for people—he never met a stranger. In later years, he found great joy in Sprint Car Racing and was an enthusiastic supporter of Roth Motorsports. He treasured time spent in the pits with the team and crew, fully immersed in the sport he loved.
Above all, Tom was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, and friend who always put family first. His legacy of warmth, laughter, faith, generosity and devotion will continue to inspire generations.
Though Tom is already deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing he is now in the presence of his Savior—rejoicing in eternal peace.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Cross City Church on Monday, October 20th, at 10:00 AM. The family requests that you bring a printed photo of yourself with Tom to share with them following services at the luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Caruthers FFA, Caruthers Blue Raiders Football , Cross City Church, and CPDES Hall, all organizations that were close to Tom’s heart.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” – Matthew 25:23
