Thomas Amadeo Mascareñaz, a man of deep curiosity, integrity, and devotion to his family, passed away peacefully in Colorado on November 3, 2025. Born in Springer, New Mexico, he was the son of Thomas Daniel Mascareñaz and Maria Placida Ramirez. Raised in Leadville, Colorado, Tom graduated from Lake High School before enrolling at the University of Colorado Boulder — thanks to his parents’ hard work and savings.
His studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served honorably at Fort Bliss. After completing his service, he returned to CU Boulder and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Accounting. Soon after, he began a long and distinguished career with the Internal Revenue Service. He first worked as a tax collector in Wyoming before being selected for a pioneering program to help the IRS develop its early computer systems in the early 1960s. This opportunity took the Mascareñaz family to Washington, D.C., where they lived until 1971, when they moved to Fresno, California.
Tom and his wife, Mary Theresa Gomez Mascareñaz, shared nearly 73 years of marriage, raising six children together and building a life rooted in faith, family, and service. Following Mary’s passing in April 2025, Tom returned home to Colorado, where he lived at the Gardens at St. Elizabeth until his final months.
He was a man of intellect and heart — endlessly curious about numbers, history, and his family’s ancestry. He was deeply proud of his roots and even prouder of the generations who followed.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his beloved son Tommy and is survived by his sister, Virginia Aguirre, and her family; five children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren — all of whom carry his spirit forward.
Funeral and burial services will be held jointly in Fresno on Monday, November 17th at 10:00 am where he will be buried beside the love of his life, Mary, and their son Tommy, as the family reunites them in eternal rest.
