Vernice was born in Chicago, IL and married Elmer "Soupy" in 1940. They moved to Fresno after World War II when Soupy left the United States Navy, and chose to attend Fresno State University. After moving to Fresno, Vernice went to work at the Fresno State Bookstore when it was located on the current Fresno City College campus. She worked her way up to become manager of the bookstore and was instrumental in the design and construction of the current California State University, Fresno bookstore at Shaw and Cedar Avenues.
She became the second female President of the Western College Bookstore Association. In 1958, Vernice became Soupy's partner in "Soupy's Lakeside Pool" at Bullard and Blackstone where they taught hundreds of children how to swim. During this same time, she helped Soupy build his Freedom Fireworks business and took a larger role in the business after he became blind.
In 1969, Vernice bought a red 1956 Thunderbird, which led to the Holmes family buying dozens of "vintage cars" over the years. These included a 1955 Thunderbird, a 1957 Thunderbird, a 1936 Ford 5 window, and a 1941 Chrysler convertible. All cars are still in the family. Her grandson, Troy, has her original red 1956 Thunderbird, and he just finished restoring a 1940 Ford Hot Rod, which she bought in 1953 from a neighbor. Vernice was a very independent woman. At 98, she was still living in the home that she and Soupy built in 1954, and she continued to drive until two years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Elmer "Soupy" Holmes; and their beloved rescue dog Dazzle; as well as many other rescue dogs. Vernice is survived by her only son, Scott "Scooter" Holmes of Fresno; her grandson, and joy of her life, Troy Holmes and wife Lindsey of San Clemente, CA; great-grandsons, Breyker and Brickson Holmes of San Clemente, CA; and daughter-in-law, Linda Holmes of Mission Viejo, CA. To honor family tradition, a service will not be held.
