I didn't know this man as much as I knew his family, and I could see the love they felt for him and him for them.  The world has lost a truly wonderful person with all who loved him and were loved by him.

Derek and I attended the police academy together in '92 and served together as officers with the Carrollton Police Dept until he went to Frisco PD in 1999. We rode together to the academy every day. Derek was a quiet, reserved person and yet, when he needed to speak and saw the opportunity to reach out to someone, he did not hesitate. He was a great officer and served selflessly with integrity. Rest easy brother, we will take it from here. Prayers for Tammy, David, our brothers and sisters in blue at Frisco PD, and your friends and family.

Officer Sanso was my first SRO at Roach Middle School. He was always so kind and I remember him just pulling me into his office to talk when I was going through a rough place. I cried in his office so many times and he was always just so comforting. I’ll never forget him as he is what made middle school memorable. Thank you for protecting us all those years!
