Don Childs passed away on August 28, 2026, in McKinney, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love for his family.
Born in August 1937 in Marlin, Texas, Don was the youngest of thirteen children born to Burrell and Maudie Childs. Growing up in a large family, Don learned the importance of family bonds, hard work, and perseverance—values that would remain with him throughout his life.
Don pursued his education at Lamar University, where he earned a degree in accounting, preparing him for a career as a Certified Public Accountant. His faith was a cherished part of his life. Don was a devoted member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston and later First United Methodist Church McKinney, where he found fellowship and continued to nurture the faith that was so meaningful to him. His commitment to excellence and strong sense of responsibility were qualities that carried through both his professional and personal life.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Don honorably served his country during a pivotal time in American history. During the Vietnam War, he was deployed as a member of the U.S. Army Security Agency Operations Company, an organization responsible for critical signals intelligence and electronic information operations. His military service also included time stationed in the Washington, D.C., area, where he contributed to work associated with the historic Bay of Pigs operation. Don's service reflected his dedication to his country and his willingness to accept responsibilities that extended far beyond himself.
While Don's life included remarkable experiences and meaningful accomplishments, his greatest legacy lives on through the family he loved and the lives he touched. He will be remembered with gratitude for his service, admiration for his accomplishments, and love for the role he played in the lives of those closest to him.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Burrell and Maudie Childs, and all twelve of his siblings.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Carolyn; his son and daughter; four grandchildren; and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Though Don's earthly journey has come to an end, the memories he created, the sacrifices he made, and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of his family and friends. His was a life marked by purpose, commitment, and service—a legacy worthy of honor and remembrance.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in McKinney, Texas.
May Don rest in eternal peace, knowing that his life was one of meaning and that his memory will continue to be cherished by those he leaves behind.
