Douglas Slaughter, son of Silas Douglas Slaughter and Margie Louise Oliver Slaughter who preceded him in death, returned to his heavenly home on January 5, 2016. Born on May 21, 1954 in Manhattan, NY; the middle son of two brothers and one sister, Douglas was described as a sensitive, energetic and inquisitive child. Douglas was one and a half years old when his family moved to Brooklyn, NY then on to Queens, NY when he was 12 years old. Along the way, he picked up the nicknames of Ronald, Honey Bunch and Doggle.
Douglas was married to Debra Harris, his bride of 27 years and raised six children; Dekeya R. Slaughter of Brooklyn, NY, Douglas R. Slaughter of Frisco, TX, Misha T. Williams of Lewisville, TX, De Mario T. Williams, Tarquin R. Williams and Shiketra Jones (Stafford) of Aurora, CO. He was also a grandfather to five grandchildren; Gabriel, Ethan, James, Lili, and Kris; and his siblings, James Oliver, Sr. (Marilyn) of Bronx, NY, Cynthia Greene (Patrick) of Brooklyn, NY and Alvin Slaughter (Joy) of Buffalo, NY.
Family and friends described Douglas as being sensitive, a loving person who had a desire to live a life devoted to God and family while serving others and his country. Those who knew him often heard him say “I’m doing alright”.
Douglas graduated John Adams High in Queens, NY in 1972. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force for 19 years then as an engineer for 18 years. When he had the time, Douglas loved to do projects around the house and gardening. He especially loved to view the heavens through his telescope, photography and singing while playing his bass guitar. It makes sense that some of his favorite spots were Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy. Douglas really enjoyed sci-fi alien movies as well as listening to jazz and gospel music. He also spent time watching the History channel.
Douglas served as a TSGT (Tech Sargent) in the Air Force where, in 1993, he also serve as the Tour Director of Tops In Blue, an all active duty US Air Force Expeditionary Entertainment Unit composed of 35 to 40 of the most talented vocalists, musicians, dancers, and technicians anywhere.
Religion played an important part of Douglas’ life. He was raised in the Baptist Church. At 17 years old, he acknowledged his calling to the ministry. He was a part of two gospel groups – The Gospel Disciples and The River City Delegation. Douglas was a former member of the Potter’s House Choir.
The world is a better place and fortunate to have had him for 61 short years. We love you dearly and it’s just, “bye for now”.
