Ernest Wells

Ernest Lee Wells Jr.(Sonny) was born on October 29, 1932 in Bonham, TX to Ernest Lee Wells Sr. and Maude Cox. Sonny had three beloved sisters, Alice, Nina, and Mary. At age 15 he decided to join the Army and with a little help from his mother he was able to enlist. During his 20 year career he distinguished himself, Medical Field Service School, Language School, War College, and Army Cargo Helicopter Pilot Course. Over his years of service he was posted inside the United States and Overseas. Overseas he served in Japan, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. Combat tours in Korea and Vietnam. Ernie was highly decorated during his career with service medals from Korea, United Nations, National Defense, and occupation medals from Japan and Germany. As a pilot he was awarded the Bronze Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal w/ 12 clusters, National Defense Service Medal w/ Oak Leaf cluster, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device. Sonny retired from the Army in 1967 with an honorable discharge attaining the rank of CW3(Lovingly nicknamed “Chief Warrant Officer God”). At the time of his retirement he was widely considered the best CH-47(Chinook) pilot in the service. After retirement he married Bonnie Jean Smith in 1967. After marriage the couple lived in Maryland and Pennsylvania before moving to Texas. Once relocated to Texas Ernie dedicated his career to the flooring industry. During his career he earned a respected position in the industry in the Dallas/Ft. Worth community. Ernie and Bonnie were married for 19 years and had three children. Anthony Lee Wells(Tony), Terrance Edward Wells(Terry), and Tiffany Ann Wells(Tiff). Whether Ernie was in Texas or Pennsylvania his most important focus was his family(Always and above all else). In 1987 Ernie and Bonnie divorced. In 1987 Ernie purchased the “Double Oak House”, this was his families home for 25 years. Ernie being the loving, generous, family focused man he was hosted numerous Holidays, Family Reunions, Graduations, and just plain family get togethers. He later tried living the lake life on Lake Tawakoni(unfortunately the lake did not cooperate).Then he tried the Florida life. He moved to join his children in Bradenton, FL but it never really took. He returned to Texas in 2015 and relocated to Little Elm, TX. During all of these moves he was accompanied by a loving family and even more loving friends, Dugan and Bugsy. He loved those pups and spoiled them constantly with treats, daily car rides, trips to the park, etc. Ernest Lee Wells Jr passed on July 14th, 2020 at 8:44pm. He was with his children, holding his hand while saying goodbye. He died in peace going to a better place knowing he was LOVED. Sonny may be gone but he will never be forgotten or LOVED.
