

Gasper “Gabe” Abene, loving husband of Janet M. Abene and member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Church was born on August 11, 1934, to Gasper and Agnes Abene in New Orleans, LA. He passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Michael Abene (Susan) of Houston, TX and Renee Abene Blaylock (Chris) of Flower Mound, TX and grandchildren Joshua Abene (Dana), Megan Krueger (Chase), Mallory Jackson (Cory), and Cole Blaylock (Jessica) along with 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Frank Abene, who resides in Hammond, LA.
LTC Abene was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth Tagert Abene.
A graduate of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, he also pursued graduate studies at USC. He retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service, which included tours in Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Germany and various U.S. installations. His distinguished career focused on airborne-infantry, counterintelligence, and intelligence collection. His commendations included the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Korean Service Medal.
After his military service, LTC Abene owned and operated two small businesses, established a Boot Camp Program at the New Orleans Prison, and held management positions at two New Orleans hotels.
Following Hurricane Katrina in 20025, Gabe and Jan relocated to Plano, TX. He was active in the Knights of Columbus in both Chalmette, LA and Plano, TX.
A lifelong athlete, LTC Abene played two years of college baseball and football, earned a black belt in Judo at Kodokan in Tokyo, and completed over 50 marathons.
A Memorial Service will be held at Stonebriar Funeral Home located at 10375 Preston Road, Frisco, TX 75033
