Gerald Jene “Jerry” McGregor was born in Norway Kansas on August 3rd, 1939, and died in Dallas Texas July 8th, 2024. He grew up a farmer in Northern Kansas, learning the value of hard work the hardest way—if you didn’t work, you didn’t eat. This work ethic was obvious throughout his life. He lived by a mantra of never being outworked and (his favorite accounting rule) first in/last out. He believed in kindness towards others, that fairness should rule the day, and holding doors open for others was the right thing to do. No matter how bad things got, he always opened the door for his wife Sharon.
Jerry left Kansas immediately after graduating high school, enlisting in the US Air Force. After Basic, he was sent to Syracuse University to learn Russian, ultimately being stationed in Karamursel, Turkey as a Russian linguist. The Cold War was in full swing, and NATO needed all the intelligence they could gather. Jerry went on daily missions designed to map out Russian air defenses’ location, strength, aircraft type, and more. Upon leaving the Air Force, he moved to Denver where he met his beloved wife, Sharon. Married for over 61 years, they never left each other’s side.
He was a natural grammarian, correcting his children’s papers with a deft touch and tone that guaranteed his children would never make the same mistake twice. He loved the nightly pun wars over dinner, which always left everyone laughing and Sharon smirking. Jerry was a gifted learner, earning his Bachelor’s in Accounting from California-Long Beach, and his law degree from University of Dallas. He combined those skillsets into a successful career in Technology Procurement Management, and ultimately operated his own business for almost 15 years before retiring.
His common sense and conservative, measured ideals were imprinted on all who met him. He was honest, ethical, loving, humorous, intense, compassionate, generous, kind, engaging, and practical. He loved all things Texas A&M, and fully supported the renegade grandchildren that went to Cincinnati, Iowa, and Auburn.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents (Lloyd and Gladys McGregor), brother Francis McGregor, sisters Marla deBrokert and Winifred Mason, and nephew Kevin McGregor. He is survived by his wife Sharon, daughters Susan McGregor-Huyer (Bill Scott), Barbara Hines (Jeffrey Hines), and son Brian (Stacey McGregor). He is also survived by the lights of his life, his nine grandchildren: Marissa Hines, Brenna Hines, Mary McGregor, Katherine Hines, Daniel McGregor-Huyer, Alex Huyer, Margaret (Meg) McGregor, Ashley McGregor, and Bryce McGregor.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 9th, at 10:30am at St Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Prosper Texas. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the T Boone Pickens Hospice Center in Dallas, Dementia Society of America, Wounded Warriors Foundation, or Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
