Born on March 23, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York, Jean was the daughter of Jennie (Giunta) and John Misciagna. She grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture of her Italian-American roots, which remained a source of pride and inspiration throughout her life.
Jean pursued her passion for music at Wagner College, where she earned her degree in music and developed her lifelong love for the arts. She began her professional journey as a music teacher, and later in life, Jean reinvented herself and found a second career as an electrologist, offering her talents and warmth to clients who quickly became friends.
Known for her deep compassion, creativity, and generous spirit, Jean had a remarkable ability to bring people together. Her home was a haven of hospitality, where the scent of her home-cooked meals filled the air and laughter often lingered long into the evening. She delighted in hosting friends and family, filling every gathering with laughter, and love.
Nothing brought Jean greater joy than spending time with her granddaughters. She treasured every moment with Elizabeth, Melissa, and Danielle, who will always carry her wisdom, warmth, and unwavering love in their hearts.
Jean is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Harwood; her loving daughter, Francine Hammerschlag, and son-in-law, William Hammerschlag; and her adored granddaughters, Elizabeth, Melissa, and Danielle. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jennie and John Misciagna, and her brother, John Misciagna.
Jean's presence was a gift to all who knew her, and her legacy of kindness, music, and family devotion will continue to resonate in the lives she touched.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be scheduled at a later date. In the meantime, her family invites friends and loved ones to honor her memory in their own special ways—whether through a shared meal, a favorite song, or a quiet moment sharing memories.
Jean Harwood’s life was a beautiful composition, and though her song has ended, the melody remains.
