John is survived by his wife of 39 years, Pamela; his two sons, Louis (Yvonne and granddaughter Julie) and Mark Derek; and his brother Arthur (Patsy).
John graduated from Bainbridge High School and then entered the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and served in North Africa. Upon return, he earned his bachelor of science degree at Florida State University and worked briefly as an engineer at the Cape in Florida. He went on to attend Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and briefly practiced law in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1972, he was certified by the U.S. Patent Office to practice patent law and joined Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York, as a patent attorney. After 10 years in the patent office there, he left for Dallas, Texas, but remained with Kodak in a sales rep position until his early retirement in 1989.
After his Kodak retirement, John continued working from home doing patent work. He was an avid golfer and when he was no longer able to golf, he taught himself guitar and accumulated a closet full of guitars. His greatest enjoyment was time spent at home with Pamela, cooking, reading the Wall Street Journal, and watching his Florida State Seminoles football games.
Pamela is grateful for the loving care John received in the past year, particularly his caregivers Connie Jones, Sassy Stewart, Tammy Capps, Monica Spencer; his hospice nurse Sandra Johnson; Memory and John Hute, and Rumbi of Grace House; and our special next-door angels, Lisa and Lila Vanek.
According to John’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls, 12377 Merit Drive, Dallas, TX 75251.
