It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Douglas Winget, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who peacefully left us on October 6, 2025, at the age of 79. John passed away at his home in Little Elm, Texas, formerly of Amarillo, TX, having lived a life full of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication.
Born on July 3, 1946, in Hereford, Texas, John was the son of the late Weldon and Evelyn Winget. He grew up with a strong work ethic and a deep sense of responsibility, which he carried throughout his life. After beginning his career as an auto mechanic, John found his true calling when he joined the Santa Fe Railroad in 1974. Over the course of 32 years, he became a respected locomotive engineer, known for his reliability and steady hand. His quiet strength and dependable nature earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Those who knew John well will remember him for his warm, generous heart and his sense of humor that could light up any room. He had a way of making everyone feel special, whether through a well-timed joke, a quiet act of kindness, or just his thoughtful presence. John’s passions were many: he loved the quiet solitude of fishing, the satisfaction of crafting in woodworking, and the joy of painting. He had a deep appreciation for classic cars, often spending hours tinkering and restoring them, and his love for music and collecting vinyl records was cherished. Above all, John loved spending time with his family. He was especially proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched with love and wisdom.
John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Beverly; his children, Jennifer and Derek Graham of Frisco, TX, and Jamie and Christopher Schipper of Frisco, TX; his cherished grandchildren, Hayley and Mitchell Thompson of Frisco, TX, Kaitlyn Hughes of Austin, TX, Emily and Aaron Volkert of Dallas, TX, Jonathan Graham of Frisco, TX, Sadie Schipper of Frisco, TX, and Evan Schipper of Frisco, TX; as well as three great-grandchildren who brought him so much joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Weldon and Evelyn Winget.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Stonebriar Funeral Home, 10375 Preston Road, Frisco, Texas, 75033, October 13, 2025 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization that was dear to John’s heart.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Rest in peace, John – you will forever be remembered, always cherished, and never forgotten.
