

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Merlyn “Pete” Amos Thompson who departed this life peacefully on October 7th, 2025 at the age of 89 at Harbor Chase of Plano, Plano Texas. Merlyn was born on March 10th, 1936 in Ellendale, Steele County, Minnesota to Norris and Luella (Farr) Thompson.
He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1954 and served in the Army stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. 1958-1960. He was honorably discharged and decorated with the Good Conduct Medal and Marksman.
Merlyn was a dedicated and loving husband to Harriet, loving wife for 66 years. They were married August 14th, 1959 at Ramsey Reformed Church in Titonka, Iowa.
As a skilled photographer, Merlyn spent his entire career capturing monumental memories of individuals, families and schools through his studio business of 55 years, Thompson Photography in Britt, Iowa where they lived until 2014. Merlyn had a particular interest in capturing the images of the Hobos during the Annual Hobo Convention in Britt. The collection is displayed at the Hobo Museum.
His kind and sweet personality was shown throughout his service in the community. He was a proud member of the Lions Club in Britt Iowa and Huntley, Illinois where he retired. Merlyn was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Britt and Shepherd of The Prairie in Huntley, Illinois where he ushered every Sunday. In addition, Merlyn helped start the West Hancock Ambulance Service in Britt on January 1, 1978. You could also spot Merlyn behind the scenes painting and building sets for the Hancock County Little Theatre in Britt and Town Square Players located in Woodstock, Illinois. During his free time, he loved to go fishing in Minnesota, travel, play cards, dominoes and work outside planting flowers and spending time with family and friends.
Merlyn and Harriet moved to Plano, Texas to be near children in 2024. Merlyn is survived by his wife, Harriet of Plano, TX; children, Brian (Karen) Thompson of Des Moines, IA, Susan (Robert) Falbo of Prosper, TX. There are four grandchildren; Alyssa (Robert) Trimble Ankeny IA, Robert Jr. (Alexa) Falbo Chicago IL, Victoria (Peyton) Lynn Plano TX, and Richard Falbo Prosper TX. Merlyn’s legacy continues with his 5 great grandchildren; Ellie and James Trimble, Brooklyn Falbo, Allie and Annie Lynn. Also surviving is his sister Charlotte Hill and nephews, Mike Hill and Joel (Amy) Hill.
Merlyn’s kindness, generosity, and love for family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. The family will host a small celebration of life at a future time.
