Sara Sue Mayes, age 85, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, after a short illness. She was born on October 22, 1939, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to Ward Columbus Harp and Callie (Nelson) Harp.
Sara was a woman of grace, style, and warmth. Known to her loved ones as a true fashionista, she took joy in shopping at Maurice’s and always made sure her hair and nails were impeccably done. Her elegance and charm left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Sara began her career at First National Bank of Springdale in 1957, where she formed lifelong friendships and earned the admiration of colleagues and customers alike. After 45 years of dedicated service, she retired in 2002, but she never lost touch with her beloved “Tuesday lunch ladies” from the bank—a weekly tradition she cherished dearly.
More than anything, Sara treasured her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and adoring grandmother. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Wesley and Callie Wages, who lit up her life. She was also an accomplished cook and baker, known for making the best snacks and desserts that brought smiles to all who gathered at her table.
Sara is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Robert A. Mayes; her daughter, Marsa Wages; son-in-law, Joseph J. Wages, Jr.; and her precious grandchildren, Wesley Wages and wife Taylor, and Callie Wages.
A celebration of Sara’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24th at the Fayetteville National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest among heroes.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation.
Sara’s love, laughter, and grace will be remembered always. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and devotion that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
