Theda Goodwyn was born on July 30, 1921, the youngest of eight children, to Charles and Daisy Rogers. She grew up in rural Maryland, graduating from high school in 1938, where despite her short stature, she played on the basketball team. After graduation, she moved to Baltimore to live with her oldest sister while attending nursing school. She became an R.N. and went on to receive a Masters Degree from Columbia University in New York City. Her nursing career involved private duty, visiting nurse and male ward. She spent her last working years as the Central Supply Supervisor at Peninsula General Hospital in Far Rockaway, NY.
Theda was loving, caring, witty and pragmatic. In her younger years she loved to reading, attending the theater, collecting bird figurines from her extensive travels, hosting family parties and playing cards. She always loved being anywhere with her family and friends and as she aged, loved to play bingo and rummy cubes, and watch TV – preferably 60-Minutes, Dateline, 48 hours, reality murder shows, and anything starring Denzel Washington. Theda was a member of Bethel AME Church in Far Rockaway, NY for over 70 years and an active member of the Missionary Society.
She married Bill Goodwyn in 1945. They lived in Inwood, Long Island, NY until she moved to Texas in 2012. She was surprised to have become a happy transplant to Texas. She spent her final years at the Parsons House Assisted Living in Frisco where she made many friends and especially enjoyed rummy cubes, bingo and weekly trips to newly discovered Wal Mart stores.
Theda is preceded in death by her siblings Ayrie, Naomi, Edith, Reggie, Paul, Charles, and Leroy; son-in-law Steven Robertson; parents Charles and Daisy Rogers; and husband Bill Goodwyn.
