Wilmer Leonard Johnson was called home by his Lord and Savior on January 7, 2023. Wil was born on May 26, 1938, to Ronald Obed Johnson and Ruth Elizabeth (Dye) Johnson in Marietta, Ohio. He spent most of his childhood in Marietta, OH, where he would later raise his own family.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Marietta College in 1960 and attending University of West Virginia Morgantown, Wil served in the United States Navy until 1965. His professional career included work in the semiconductor, medical electronics, and scanning electron microscopy industries.
Wil met Bev, his wife of more than 63 years at the First Baptist Church in Marietta, Ohio. His faith in God was instilled and nurtured by the church and was the guide for his life. Along with his love for God, Wil loved technology, music, travel, dogs, cats, and the challenge of something new. Even into his 70’s and beyond, Wil became adept at Ubuntu and learned to navigate the stock market. Wil led a very active life-style; he loved snow skiing, scuba diving, biking, swimming, and taking his dog and cat for walks (yes, the cat would go for a walk with them ). He instilled a passion for the outdoors in his children, which lives on to this day. Wil loved music – he had a fabulous tenor voice and sang in the church choir and men’s chorus. He enjoyed playing the trombone. One of Wil’s pastimes was wood working; his work ranged from elements of the house itself to sturdy pieces of furniture. Wil looked forward to travel; his sense of adventure took him to various parts of the world including Europe and the Americas – he circumnavigated the globe in the Navy and rounded the Cape of Good Hope. Wil and Bev traveled extensively and greatly enjoyed trips with their RV club, cruises to Spain and Alaska, scuba diving trips to the warm waters of the Cayman Islands, Florida, and Mexico. Trips with his family were his favorites.
Wil was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald O. Johnson and Ruth E. Johnson, his infant son, Robert, and his adult daughter, Susan Lynn (Johnson) Cunningham. He is survived by his wife, Beverly A. Johnson, of Frisco, Texas, his son, Ronald E. Johnson, of Jackson, Ohio, his daughter, Vena Johnson Sankar, of Frisco, Texas, and his sister Sara Berry of Spring, Texas, three grandchildren, and several nieces, and nephews.
Visitation is at Stonebriar Funeral Home in Frisco, Texas from 1:30pm to 3:30pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. We will celebrate his life with a short service at 3:30pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, followed by casual get together with light refreshments.
