Donald M Baines

August 18, 1938December 20, 2018

Donald M. Baines entered the world at his home in Fruitland on August 18, 1938. His parents, John G. and Leta Lorene (Kreibal) Baines came west looking for a better life and settled in Fruitland.

Donnie, as he was known in his childhood, grew up on the farm and later raised Black Angus cattle on that same farm.

Don married Konnie Hale Rhodes and her two year old son Jeffrey in 1963. They managed the Pay-Ont Drive In Theater and also owned and operated Don's Dinner Den (the former Inn and Out).

Charles "Chuck" was added to the family in 1964. They sold the restaurant and gave up managing the theater to move onto the family farm to milk cows. He did this for several years and during this time he also drove school bus.

Don was instrumental in restoring the old Fruitland High School when a group formed a 501C3 non-profit and made it the Olde School Community Center. He enjoyed taxidermy and woodworking, was an avid fisherman and loved to hunt birds and big game.

Don is survived by his wife of 56 years, Konnie; two sons and their wives, Jeffrey and Carla, Charles "Chuck" and Ronda; six grandchildren (listed in chronological order), Layna (Zachary) Martin, Evan, Colin, Chas (Gabrielle), Trinity, and Nelson; great grandson, Charles Darius Baines born December 26, 2018; his brother, Johnnie (Judy) and his sister, Mall Letha Summer.

Don rode his four-wheeler to meet Jesus on December 20, 2018. He died suddenly at home. He will be missed by family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD through Alma Mater, Inc. P.O. Box 904, Fruitland, Idaho 83619.

My grandfather was an incredible man. My memories of him are all simple, but it was in that simplicity that he loved so richly. He was a wise man who looked at the world very matter-of-factly. His education of me was simple; what a 3/8 inch crescent wrench looked like, how to stretch a fence wire, the proper way to make the shovel work for you instead of you working for the shovel. He always found a place for me and was never annoyed with my desire to "help," even when that meant sleeping in the cab of the work truck in the field he was bailing hay in at 4:30 in the morning. He knew I just wanted to be close, to watch and learn, to grow up on his lap because that's where we both wanted to be. I'll never forget the lessons, my "jobs" pulling levers on the various hay equipment, and the time spent talking about life. We laughed a great deal, my grandfather and I. And I'm eternally grateful... I'll never get to share my son with him on this Earth, he died 6 days before Darius was born, but I look forward to the day we meet again in the greenest pastures on the warmest hillside, sheltered in our Lord's embrace. And I know he'll be there... my grandfather, the farmer.
