Barbara A Long passed away peacefully the morning of February 2, 2020 with her family beside her.
Barbara was born February 5, 1939 in Ft. Collins, Colorado to Harold and Mildred Greenwalt. She grew up on a 700 acre farm in northern Loveland with her parents and three sisters Diana, Fran and Patti. She was very active in 4-H and Little Britches Rodeo. In 1954, she earned the All Around Championship title by competing in bull riding, calf roping, wild cow milking, quarter mile horse race, barrels, poles, flag race, and stake race. Barbara loved to tell stories of riding her Shetland pony, Goldie, to and from school daily.
Barbara married Bob Bernhardt in 1956. They had 3 children- Jonnye, Mark, and Cindy. Bob was a jockey and together they traveled the country for many years before returning back to Colorado in 1968. She made sure that her children stayed active with the horses and 4-H, and played an active role not only in their lives but that also of her grandchildren. Barbara completed cosmetology school and was a successful salon owner for 43 years. Barbara and Bob divorced in 1974. On June 21,1977 she married Jack Long, the love of her life, and together they owned a small horse ranch in Wellington, Colorado and created their business of “Generation Performance Horses”. In December 2001, Jack passed away and Barbara returned to Loveland and turned the business over to her granddaughter Jessica. Barbara thoroughly enjoyed her travels with her sisters, her children, and grandchildren. She was quoted as saying, "I’ve been blessed and it’s been a wonderful journey." Barbara is survived by her children, Jonnye Smith, Cindy (John) Gilzean, Mark (Lisa) Bernhardt; stepson, Troy (Susan) Long; step daughter, Laura (Jeremy) Hardung. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. Her sisters, Diane (Michael) McCarthy, Fran (Ed) Goulding, and Patti (Brian) Kane also survive her. She is proceeded in death by her parents and husband, Jack.
