She was born June 18, 1940 in Joliet, IL to C. Alvin and Evelyn Johnson, and is a granddaughter to four Swedish immigrants. She is survived by her husband Chuck Smith, son Spencer Smith of Boulder, son Erik Smith, MD, Erik’s wife Caitlin Ann, grandchildren Charlie Ann, 10, and Calvin 12, all of Sheridan, WY, and a sister, Janice Wilson of Plainfield, IL.
Barbara attended Wheaton College, BS, The University of Wisconsin, MS, and Colorado State University, PhD. She worked as a hospital laboratory technician in Joliet, at a dietary research and treatment center for metabolic diseases in newborns at the UofW, and as assistant professor teaching clinical nutrition at CSU, 1974-2000.
Barbara was active in church, League of Women Voters, and served on the board of the local Parkinsons support group. She enjoyed time with family in Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming, and also traveled with Chuck in Japan, Europe and India. She was active cycling, gardening, hiking, and later at table tennis. Barbara kept high spirits through several years of progressive Parkinsons disease and had her life end due also to advanced cancer.
A memorial service is at 11 am, Wednesday, September 10, at Allnutt Funeral Services, 650 W. Drake Rd. in Fort Collins, with a reception/luncheon to follow.
