Raised near Wolford, North Dakota, on the farm homesteaded by his grandfather Ben Jacobson in 1905. Burton grew up with a passion for cars—a love that stayed with him as he owned 32 different models throughout his life. After graduating from Wolford High School, he attended the pre-engineering program at Bottineau School of Forestry and graduated from North Dakota State University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering.
In 1960, Burton married Marlene Rudolph in Wolford. His distinguished engineering career with the Veterans Administration, US Air Force, Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, First Interstate Bank, US West Communications, and Qwest Corporation took the couple to 8 states over 19 moves. In retirement, they enjoyed living in Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard Jacobson.
Burton is survived by his wife, Marlene; his son, Neil Jacobson (Patty Clark); his daughter, Sara Self (Lonnie); grandchildren Arric Self (Tiffani Langley), Tegan Chapa (Adan Encinias), and Ian Clark Jacobson; great-grandchildren Amaya, Julianne, Fraeya, and Onnika; and his two sisters, Ardis Jacobson and Mary Jane Haugen.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
