Carl Arthur Newburg

Carl Arthur Newburg, age 85, of Fort Collins, Colorado passed away on Monday, January 10, 2022. Carl was born on July 1, 1936 in Greeley, Colorado. He was the first of three children born to Ferdinand Franklin Newburg (1908-2003) and Karolyn Elmira Laird Newburg (1914-1995.) His maternal grandmother, Dr. Myrtle Elmira Brown Laird, had an osteopathy practice in Greeley and delivered him. Carl interrupted his studies at Duke University to enlist in the U.S. Army on May 28, 1958. He was honorably discharged on January 27, 1961 and returned to Duke University to complete his B.A. Carl married Carole Edith Drape (1938-1992) on November 25, 1966 in Nassau County, New York.

As a child, Carl aspired to be a construction supervisor like his father, though Carl was not fond of all the traveling that his dad's job necessitated. His parents lived in 50 locations in their first ten years of marriage and Carl went to seven first grades - including schools in Trinidad, West Indies; New Jersey; Colorado and California. This was not due to any lack of intelligence! It is no wonder that once Carl completed his B.A. in physics and math at Duke University and accepted a job as a computer programmer for Sperry Rand Corporation on Long Island, he did not move from Long Island for 54 years. In 2015, Carl returned to Colorado to live out the remainder of his life near family.
