Charles Stewart Young, 84, passed away on June 28, 2016. Charles was born on February 12, 1932 in Gonzales, Louisiana, the son of Hyson and Violet Young. Upon graduating from Gonzales High School in 1950, Charles turned down an LSU Agriculture Scholarship to pursue his calling into the ministry. This led him to Louisiana Baptist College where he met and married, Bobbie Grantham Young, his wife of 64 years. Upon graduating from college in 1954, Charles went on to further his education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, earning a Masters of Divinity in 1958.
During his ministry with the Southern Baptist Convention, Charles pastored churches in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. He served as a Home Missionary and Church Planter in West Virginia for 17 years. He then served 12 years as Director of Missions for Greenup Baptist Association in Ashland, Kentucky. He and Bobbie then retired to Fort Collins, Colorado where he served as a Stewardship Consultant for Colorado Baptist General Convention.
Charles’ love for people and passion for foreign missions took him to Africa and Brazil on short term trips. He also helped establish disaster relief efforts with Kentucky Baptist and Colorado Baptist Disaster Relief. He gladly volunteered his time and service to meet the urgent needs of people in crisis.
An avid gardener, Charles was composting before composting was “hip” and enjoyed sharing his expertise in this area with anyone who would care to listen. He also enjoyed reading and collecting coins and rocks, sharing all of these interests with his grandchildren.
Charles was seen as a man of few words; he lived his daily life exemplifying his faith in God and compassion for all people. Even through the hardship of Alzheimer’s, he was a joyful and devoted servant of God. He spent his last few years sharing his love for the Lord and touching lives at Elderhaus and Windsor Healthcare Center.
Charles is survived by his wife, Bobbie, daughters Hope Proksch (Walt), Savoy, Illinois and Shannah Scott (Bill), Fort Collins, Colorado; grandchildren Stewart Farnum, Alyson Spugnardi (Chad), Matthew Scott, Tre’ Scott (Brianna) and McKenna Scott; great grandchild Daphne Rose Spugnardi respectively, as well as a younger brother Jorda Young (Barbara) and sister-in-law Loraine Young.
