Daniel B. Jinich

October 12, 1953March 27, 2019

Daniel B. Jinich, MD, aka “Dr. Dan,” died unexpectedly March 27, 2019 after an accidental fall on his property overlooking Horsetooth Reservoir.

He was 65 years old. He leaves behind an extended family, including his daughter, mother, sister and three brothers, sister in-laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and many cousins in the United States and Mexico. And we can’t leave out his dogs Baxter and Bramley.

Dr. Dan was born in Mexico City, Mexico, where his father practiced and taught medicine. As a small boy, he learned from his father to treat the person rather than the illness. Dr. Dan was a humanistic physician who knew that a compassionate relationship and authentic connection could be helpful in the art of healing, and he was known and respected as a caring doctor who listened to his patients and gave them time to talk and to heal.

Dan received a B.A. with honors from Swarthmore College in 1976, and his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 1979. He completed three years of residency specializing in family medicine in 1983 at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital in San Pedro, California.

Dan moved to Fort Collins in 1983, where he maintained a private practice for 36 years. For the past 16 years, he was also the team physician for the Colorado Eagles hockey team. He was a former chairperson for the Board for both Larimer Humane Society and 3Hopeful Hearts, a non-profit dedicated to supporting families after the loss of a child. Dan’s life was tragically marked 10 years ago by the sudden and tragic death of his daughter, Johanna Justin-Jinich.

Dan was a good, caring, wonderful, and funny person. He was a loving brother and uncle, a silly great uncle, and an amazing son. He leaves behind many good friends, loyal and wonderful patients, a beloved office staff, colleagues in medicine, and the community at large of Fort Collins, which he loved and considered his home and his community. He will be deeply missed.

A public memorial service in his honor will be held on Sunday, April 14, at Windsong Estate Event Center, 2901 Saddler Blvd., Fort Collins, CO 80524, Service to begin at 2 p.m. with time to gather following.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in Dan’s name to 3Hopeful Hearts (

Dr. Joni has has been my doctor all of my adult life. He has seen me through all types of issues throughout my life. He has been more than a doctor to me, he has also been a good friend. I and my family will miss him greatly. He has inspired me to do more for my fellow man by doing the things that are not easy but is necessary to help others. He was the most dedicated person I have ever known. He has helped my wife’s family as well. A true humanitarian that made all of our lives better.

I had the joy of experiencing the wonderful environment of Dr Dan’s office when I went along with my daughter when she had an appointment. I felt a great warmth and caring presence in the space and when I left, my heart was full of the safety and well-being of my family as they were in such caring hands with Dr Dan, his dogs and staff.

It gave me great peace that I did not realize filled my subconscious until realizing he was no longer there to nurture and help my family remain well and healthy. I am so fortunate, as is my family, to have come across such a exceptional man in our brief time here in Fort Collins. He will remain in my heart always.

Know that we are with you in spirit as you feel your loss. With love, Lee Benz

Dr. Daniel Jinich is one of a kind, an outstanding doctor and loving soul. It is a tragedy he was taken so early in this life yet somehow bittersweet knowing he joined his darling daughter.

My family are patients of this kind man, who was more than a doctor he was a friend. I remember many times chatting after an office visit, he and I would share wines we loved. One could say he prescribed happiness with his warm smile, inviting nature, and genuine love for others.

My heart goes out to his family, the community and his practice.

Hearing of the passing of Dr. Dan has deeply touched all of our family! Dr. Dan has been our physician for the past 30 years. He was recommended to us by friends, and we knew we had met not only an amazing doctor but we, in addition, gained an amazing friend on that first appointment. We know we are like SO many of his patients who have a personal story and wonderful memories of Dr. Dan! For our family, he was there through regular yearly exams along with life-threatening events. It was Dr. Dan that literally saved my life! In the OR the entire medical staff at MCR were praising the lifesaving efforts and care of Dr. Dan! He made you feel like you were family. He told you the truth and stood with you and next to you through thick and thin. He had an amazing way of making you feel special. The gift of a seeing a GP, is a unique gift, as over time (years), Dr. Dan was able to recognize and treat issues others may have missed. Dan knew each of us personally as well as medically. This is a unique combination; he only wanted to serve others and provided extraordinary care. Dr. Dan's passing has left a void in our lives personally and a void in the community of Fort Collins!
Our love and prayers are extended to his family, staff, and friends. We will miss you greatly, Dr. Dan, and will always hold your memory in our hearts!

There is nothing I can say about Dr Jinich that hasn't already been said, but still I want to express my condolences. Dr Jinich was the most kind, compassionate, down-to-earth doctor I have ever gone to. It was clear from my first appointment with him so many years ago that he was something incredibly special. I never dreaded appointments with him because I knew he (and his wonderful side-kick Sharon) would always greet me with a warm smile and treat me like a friend. When I'd see Dr Jinich outside with Baxter in between appointments, I knew he not only had a special way with people, but animals as well. RIP dear, sweet, gentle man. I am heartbroken.

So sad to hear of the passing of our dear "Dr Dan". Our family started with Dan when he was with Associates in Family Medicine and we continued with him when he started his own practice. He cared for us with compassion and humor and listened to our joys and concerns, a rarity in the world of today's big medicine. He was the pediatrician for our two children, ages 21 and 24 from their births at PVH until his passing. You will be missed Dan....

We are heartbroken by Dr. Dan's passing. As a new college graduate in 2002; Dan's solo practice came up on my google search of doctors who accepted my insurance. From that first appointment, I knew Dr. Dan was one-of-a-kind; and I was lucky to be a patient of his. After I was married; my husband, followed by two children, became patients of Dr. Dan. While his medical wisdom was vast; his ability to relate with gentle kindness is what we will remember most. He erred on the side of caution, but was grounded in practicality and common sense. He literally had a twinkle in his eye when he spoke and a chuckle that was contagious. During my last conversation with Dr. Dan on March 6th; I told him how much he meant to our family and gave him a hug. I will be forever grateful that I left him with these words of gratitude. There is most certainly a hole in our hearts. While our family is grieving this loss; our prayers are with Dan's family and friends. May peace be with you during this time.

With abounding love-
