An early winter day in 1937—November 30th to be exact—marked the birth of Donna Lou Trumbull. A Kansas wind was blowing over the sod house where she was born to Lawrence Leon and Alice Alberta Trumbull. Dr. Peck didn’t quite make it in time for her arrival; Donna was forever on the go and in a hurry from the very start.
She attended Long Ridge country school through the eighth grade and went on to attend St. Francis High School. At the age of 16, she married Rex W. Hevner, although they later separated. Their family grew quickly with the births of their three children: Larry Wayne (born 1954), Craig Allen (born 1955), and Jodene Alice (born 1957). All three were born in the Saint Francis Hospital—and that time, Dr. Peck was there to deliver Larry!
The family settled in Goodland, Kansas, in 1965, where her children grew up and graduated. Donna’s own determination led her to beauty college in 1969. After graduating in 1970, she operated her own salon with pride and later shared her skills by teaching cosmetology from 1972 to 1975.
On July 17, 1977, Donna married her lifelong friend, Donald Eugene Moberly. Don brought his three daughters into her life: Cindy, Debbie, and Terri. Donna and Don adopted each other’s children, and considered them as their own. Together, they operated Moberly Construction and Poudre River Cabins & Resort, building a life in Colorado marked by hard work and a welcoming spirit.
Donna was a woman of deep conviction who spoke to Jesus daily. Her heart for service led her to volunteer as a first responder with the Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District, where she offered strength and humility to her neighbors in their times of need. Her life was full of variety; she held dual citizenship and lived for a time in Sonora, Mexico, an experience that broadened her perspective and enriched her stories.
She found great joy in the quiet beauty of roses, butterflies, and oil painting. She was an avid reader and a fan of the classics, especially Old Westerns featuring Matt Dillon and John Wayne—characters that reflected her appreciation for enduring strength and "the quiet pleasure of time well spent." In her later years, her faithful pets, Molly and Kiki, were her constant companions.
Life became harder for Donna after Don passed away on April 17, 2006, but she leaned into the love of her family. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister Naomi, and her beloved daughter-in-law, Tammy Hevner.
Donna passed away peacefully in Fort Collins on March 10, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her sister, Patty Trumbull; her children: Larry (Marie) Hevner, Craig (Patti) Hevner, Jodee (Mike) Holzwarth, Cindy (Joe) Kailey, Debbie (Tom) Laake, and Terri (John) Parsons; as well as 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren- who were her greatest pride and joy.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, March 20, 2026 at the Allnutt Drake Chapel, with a catered reception to follow. Final interment will be at Saint Francis Cemetery in Saint Francis, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pathways Hospice (305 Carpenter Rd, Fort Collins, 80525) or the Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District (PO Box 370, Laporte, 80535).
Donna will be remembered as she lived: inspirational, selfless, and always steady in her care for others.
