She was born number seven out of her parent’s ten children. The ten births were spread out over twenty years! Because of the large family, she helped raise her younger siblings. She lived on a farm that was homesteaded by her grandfather, Jacob Schmidt. There were many chores to share on the farm like gathering kindling, milking the cows, cleaning the milk house and utensils, doing laundry, cooking and stacking hay. Her family celebrated birthdays and other occasions by making homemade ice cream. As a teenager she liked sewing and with the large family, there was always something that needed to be sewn.
Her family attended Tabor Mennonite Church regularly. It was an important part of her life growing up. They had devotions and prayers as a family every morning and sang a lot, especially on weekends.
While a sophomore in high school, she met Elmer Reimer. She graduated from Goessel High School in 1939. During their engagement, they went to church functions, ball games and plays together. On March 19, 1942, she married Elmer in Goessel when she was twenty.
During Emma and Elmer’s early married life, they lived on a farm west of Goessel where they rented land and farmed, and welcomed their first daughter, Joy. They later moved to another farm which was north of Newton Kansas, and had their second daughter, Beverly. They moved to Newton in 1949 where their family was completed with the birth of a son, Warren.
The first years of married life were hard because of World War II. Elmer was exempt from serving in the armed services because he was farming. Emma was always busy helping to make ends meet. She would make the children’s clothes and grew a large garden. Emma enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables and was known for her baking skills.
Church activities were always a big part of their lives, especially after their children were born. Emma taught Sunday School, Bible School and was involved in the Women’s Missionary Society.
In 1967, Elmer and Emma moved to Loveland, Colorado where they purchased a Mobil Oil Bulk Agency. They bought a home where Emma had room for a flower and vegetable garden. Emma also worked, for a short time, as a seamstress at a local cleaners.
Emma’s favorite activities were sewing, quilting, gardening, reading and walking through the neighborhood. She especially enjoyed baking pies, cookies and cinnamon rolls for her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Emma and Elmer enjoyed being with friends from Life Spring Covenant Church, 60+ Club and other activities in church. They were thankful for the family and friends God had given them.
Later years for Emma and Elmer were spent living at The Wexford, Lakeview Commons and North Shore Health and Rehab in Loveland.
She was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings and her husband in 2012. She is survived by children, Joy (Will) Boschman of Bakersfield, CA, Beverly (Wayne) Fast of Newton, KS and Warren (Cathy) Reimer of Loveland CO and grandchildren, Monica Boschman, Todd Boschman and Marcy Saul, Shauna Boyd and Kerri Hurd, Matt Reimer, Jared Reimer and Jeff Reimer.
