Erwin Francis Osborn

Born on February 24, 1939, in Fulton, Oswego, New York, he was the only child of Erwin Bernard Osborn and Lillie Mae Halstead. Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, Erwin spent his earliest years waiting for his father to return from military service overseas. He attended Fulton High School and went on to earn his degree in education from Oswego Teacher’s College (now the State University of New York at Oswego).

In the mid-1960s, Erwin relocated from Corona, California, to Fort Collins, Colorado, beginning a long and meaningful career as a 5th and 6th-grade elementary school teacher. A dedicated educator, he worked tirelessly to provide for his family—often working multiple jobs—and instilled in his students and children a lifelong value for learning, accountability, and hard work. Even after retiring from the classroom, Erwin found that he missed working and remained active, eventually joining the full-time team at Target.

Erwin was a complex, multi-layered man whose quiet demeanor hid a deep well of devotion, a sharp intellect, and a dry sense of humor that made earning a laugh from him feel like a badge of honor. Though introverted by nature, he expressed his love through steadfast presence and unwavering support. He was a constant fixture at every sporting event, band concert, youth activity, father-son camping trip, and summer excursion to Broncos training camp in Greeley. He raised his children to be kind, independent, and productive, always championing their individual growth and serving as their biggest supporter. Erwin didn't just participate in his children’s lives—he fully invited them into his own, sharing his passions at every opportunity. His children fondly recall attending countless musicals with him, frequenting the Buell Theatre, the Lincoln Center, and the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse.

A true lifelong learner and avid reader, Erwin was a vast treasury of knowledge. He possessed a rich vocabulary that made him a formidable Scrabble player and trivia powerhouse, loved reading history, and kept up with modern technology by amassing an extensive digital Kindle collection. His passions ranged from Gilbert & Sullivan musicals, theater, and fine arts to driving his MG, cycling, photography, and exploring local dining establishments throughout Northern Colorado. He started Greek Week while at CLP and enjoyed working in the Ram’s Horn at CSU football games in the 1980s. Erwin also held a special affection for Australian Shepherds.

In his later years, Erwin embraced the adventure of the high seas, taking up cruising well into his 80s and inspiring his family to explore the world. He took immense joy in researching their travel destinations, mapping out details of what they would see, and following along on their journeys.

Erwin will be a remembered as a man of quiet strength and steadfast character who showed up for the people he loved. He will be dearly missed.

He leaves behind an incredible legacy that carries on in the lives of his children: Erwin George Osborn (Holly), David Sean Osborn (Liz), William "Bill" Garrett Osborn (Roni), and Sarah Beth Osborn; his grandchildren: Zach Moreno (Christina), Avry, Brynlee Ledford, Preston Mitchell, AJ, Beth, and Scott; and his great-grandchildren: Aiyana Moreno and Roan Moreno. He is also remembered by a dear family friend, Heather Freitag.

Erwin was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Mae Osborn (d. 1956), and his father, Erwin Bernard Osborn (d. 2003).

A Celebration of Erwin’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Resthaven Funeral Home in Fort Collins. Details are forthcoming.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Erwin’s honor to Pathways Hospice or to a local elementary school to support young learners.
