Longtime Loveland resident Janice Maureen June, 77, passed away peacefully, following an extended illness, on August 20, 2024. She was surrounded by close family members at Hospice Pathways in Fort Collins.
A Memorial Service will be held for Janice at 10am on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Foundations Church, 1159 Main Street in Windsor, Colorado. A reception with refreshments will follow at the church. Contributions of appetizers, salad, or dessert are appreciated.
Janice was born on March 8, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri to William and Margaret Moore, the younger of two daughters. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, graduating Wyandotte High School in 1965. Academic excellence and expertise as a cellist earned her full scholarship status at the University of Kansas, where she was an officer at Miller Scholarship Hall. In 1969, she graduated KU in Music Education, with academic honors including Mortar Board and Pi Lambda Theta, among other laudable activities. Thus began a lifetime of devotion and hard work as an educator, from 1969 to retirement in 2004. Notably, one year, Janice's peers rewarded her "leadership, innovative teaching, and active commitment to the Thompson Education Association" with her school's "Crystal Apple" award.
Beginning in 1972, Janice served 32 years in Loveland area elementary schools. She taught music at Big Thompson and Monroe Elementary Schools. Finally, after earning an M.A. in Elementary Education, she taught intermediate classrooms at Winona and Mary Blair Elementary Schools. Previously, she taught three school years in Kansas City and in Emporia, Kansas, from 1969 to 1972. During the 1970's and 1980's, Janice also performed with the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra and taught cello privately.
In retirement, Janice literally became a world traveler, touring all seven continents and innumerable locales nearly every year! Early in life, as an avid reader of National Geographic magazine, she dreamed of adventures afar. Those dreams became realities, documented in thick scrapbooks Janice created, often during the all-night sessions of a scrapbooking club. Alpha Delta Kappa, the international honorary organization for educators, was an important affiliation to her, with which she traveled and had served as president.
Janice's Loveland home, purchased with her former husband Don June in 1977, was a frequent meeting place for various groups of friends who shared her enjoyment of card games and golfing, for example. She was also a tireless shopper. This inspired her to clerk part-time for nearly 25 years after retirement, at both Foley's and Macy's department stores in Fort Collins.
Because listening to classical music on Colorado Public Radio (CPR) rivaled her love of reading, Janice's family requests that donations in her memory be made to CPR, in lieu of flowers. Survivors include Janice's son, Bryce June, Denver; sister Sharon Fulton, Fort Collins; niece Melanie (Eric) Fronapfel, and nephews Carnie Fulton, Denver, and Rob Fulton, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Grandchildren include Eliott June, Denver; Evin June, Loveland, and granddaughter Aniela June and grandson Michael June, both of Lodz, Poland. Another son, Christopher June, is deceased.
Memories of Janice and words of condolence for her family are welcome at resthavencolorado.com.
