Joan S. Mielbeck

Joan S. Mielbeck, 72, formerly of LaPorte, passed away on Friday evening, June 16, 2006 in Fort Collins, Colorado. She was the tenth child born to Angie H. (Beck) and Hugh O. Barnes on April 8, 1934 in Berrien County, Michigan. She was an Elston High School "Red Devil" who married a LaPorte "Slicer".

On August 2, 1952 in Michigan City, she married Roger L. Mielbeck, who preceded her in death.Joan is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Patricia and Kevin Mielbeck of Windsor, CO; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Daniel Berrier of Fort Collins, CO; brothers, Paul Barnes of Michigan City, IN and Richard Barnes of Willow Springs, MO; and four sisters, Della Hutton of Garrett, IN, Alice Roth of Michigan City, IN, Margaret (Peggy) Gunn of Hesperia, CA and Catherine (Kate) Werner of Michigan City, IN; two grandsons, Nathan and Collin Mielbeck.

Joan was preceded in death by both parents, one brother, Robert Barnes and two sisters, Phylis O'Brien and Shirley Krickhahm. Joan's life was filled with a love of the outdoors, as evidenced by her many travels, camping out, long hikes in the mountains, bird watching, snowmobiling, cross county skiing, outdoor festivals and the large gardens she planted every year. It didn't matter what season it was, she would be out in the fresh air. Above all else, she loved being 'on the go,' especially with her family and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Joan's life will be announced at a later time. Donations are encouraged to be sent to the charity of your choice in her memory.
