I'm the little sister of Randy's that Joe helped learn to talk.  My dad always said he wasn't sure if that was a good thing?  

We always felt that Joe was just part of our family and remember fondly those summer times on the farm.  I know that my Dad thought of Joe like a son.

I'm very grateful that Joe was able to go visit Dad shortly before Dad passed away, they had a good number of hours reminiscing and catching up.  Dad was always very proud of Joe and his career and family.

Sorry to the rest of my cousins, but I must admit Joe was my favorite.  I wish I could be with you Monday to give you all a big hug, but we will come up this summer and have a good visit.

Joe is someone who touched my life deeply.  We had 5 children in our family, 4 boys and me. I learned to play baseball, football and army with Joe.  He was 13 months younger than I am.  He was the first companion I had in life and was my first best friend. He made friends easily and had a lot of them.  People were drawn to him.  He loved his wife, Linda and his sons Ryan and Shawn with all of his heart.  As you can tell from his picture here, he loved his dogs.  He had a lot of pets in his lifetime, but his German Shepard's Gretchen, Champ and Jenna were his caretakers too.  There are a lot of things that I could tell you about Joe, but what has struck me the most is his final decision.  When Joe knew that he wouldn't leave the hospital, he and his wife talked about and made the decision that it was time for him to go home to heaven.  Usually, I would leave this as a private moment and a private thought for me, but this has made me respect Joe so much, that I feel the need to share my thoughts here.  

I almost didn't get the chance to say good-bye, but I am grateful to God that I did.  Joe's last two days on this earth have changed my life.  I loved Joe and I always will.  I will miss the days that could have been.  When someone passes away, we always feel that way.  But I watched a man who loved life and his family decide that it was time.  As I watched Joe those two days, he wanted all of us to be happy and he shared stories about his dogs and how they watched over him.  He told us all, how good God had been to him and how blessed his life was.  I watched my brother get ready to meet God.  Joe was brave and knew where he was going.  He KNEW.  I know that there are others who have faced this moment before, but I have never been in their presences.  I watched Joe take the road to heaven.  I respect Joe as much as I ever have and I will forever be changed by his presence in my life.  

I will tell you this, I pray that when it is your time, you will know as Joe did, that heaven is real and it is where you are going.  That Jesus died for your sins and mine.  That Jesus is Lord.  That...... The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit are not make believe.  My parents, my brothers and I walk in that faith.  Joe's life here and his life now are proof.  I love you Joe and I thank you for allowing me the honor of being with you when you left here and went to heaven.  I will see you soon.

My memories of Joe

Joe was very close to me in our younger years as Joe and I were spending summers together as he was a very active young man and had gotten into a little trouble in Ft.Collins so my Dad (Glen Luelf) Joe's Uncle had him come to the farm to be with us so we could keep him busy. I (Randy Luelf) and Joe had many times of getting into mischief ourselves on the farm. 

Joe learned a lot of things on the farm. He was a very good worker as we did farm chores and worked on the farm. Joe learned to drive tractors and all kinds of farm things. He even learned to hunt with a 22 rifle that was my Dad's. One time Joe spotted a skunk and asked if he could get it and Dad told him it was okay as the skunks were getting into the chickens. However Joe failed to note the direction of the wind and he had a bit of an smell to him when he returned to the house. At that time we had company at the house. My Mom's Uncle Charles was there and had a very dry humor. He simply looked at Joe and said,""Say pal you stink just like a d_ _ _ skunk you do."" Joe was a bit embarrassed  but that was one incident that will always stick in my mind.

Joe and I spent a lot of time doing chores. At that time Dad was raising a lot of pigs and part of our duties were to keep the pigs water barrels full. At that time my sister who was learning to talk and she always wanted to be with big brother and Joe. We would take her to the hog lots and sit her on top to a railroad tie post. Then we would teach her to talk along with other things two teenage boys could teach her. 

I was about just over 2 1/2 years older that Joe so we were able to drive around and we would have a lot of fun going to town when we were not working. Joe and I played pool together and spent time at Mary's White Kitchen in Olathe Colorado. Joe made friends with some of my friends and they remember him to this day.

Joe always stayed close to our family. Joe came to visit my Dad in later years and dad was very glad to see or talk to Joe. They had a strong bond with each other.

Joe will be missed by all of those that knew him.

God has taken another wonderful soul to be with him. May you rest in peace Joe
