So many people learned so much from him. He was a talented statistics tutor, who graduated from CSU in May with a degree in Data Science, a concentration in statistics, and a certificate in Sports Analytics, after an impressive run of academic scholarships, research awards, and internships. He was to be a generalist; to make his mark on the world by lending his statistical expertise to a wide range of scientific and scholarly projects. To that end, he was an avid reader of non-fiction -- this made it hard to argue with him, with all that knowledge at his command, but a proper conversation with him was always an education.
He also taught us how to help each other. In the aftermath of his passing, we are extremely grateful for the private stories people have shared about the times Justin helped them when they were struggling in their own lives. His insightful, humble advice helped us on the bad days, and his humor and warmth (especially his smiles and hugs) helped us every other day.
His life took place in Fort Collins. He graduated from Liberty Common High School and Colorado State University. He volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol and the Larimer County Humane Society. He got breakfast with Mom on Sundays. He hiked Horsetooth with me on Tuesdays, and with Dad on Saturdays. He played pool on Wednesdays, and we played volleyball at City Park on Thursdays. He had, in this sense, a very full life, that so many of us got to be apart of, to our benefit and to his. He loved us all.
He leaves behind a mother, a father, two brothers, a sister-in-law, a niece, and uncountably many friends.
He leaves behind us all. Friends and family, colleagues and mentors, students and teachers, He loved, and helped, and cared for, and worked with, and learned from, and was admired by so very many people that it has been impossible to find them all in this short week.
And a week is far too short a time to prepare adequate remarks about his life, his work, and especially his future. A memorial will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Lory Student Center at CSU, which will allow us time to gather his full personal and intellectual story. Anyone who would like to hear or speak about his life is welcome to attend. Thank you all.
