Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on April 4, 1934 to George A and Adele B. MacDonald, (nee DeBlois), he was the second born of four children. His early childhood was a happy one. He was raised in a neighborhood of predominately Irish, Polish, and Italian ethnic backgrounds. His nickname was Sunshine in his early life.
He graduated from Dickinson High School in January 1953. He learned responsibility at an early age and worked at various jobs while attending school. After graduation he obtained full time work in the printing industry and attended Jersey City Junior College. He married Carol Joan Woehlemann in 1953. Leaving the printing industry, he then worked at UPS where he was a driver for 12 years. They had five children and moved to Ft. Collins in 1972 and was re-employed by UPS as a driver and then supervisor. He and Carol divorced in 1980. This was a turning point in his life and for the next 2 years he went through an intensive growing process. During this period of time, he met and married Cindy Haraway, whom he shared his life with for 38 years. In 1986, he was employed by the Thompson School District as a Dispatcher/Scheduler for the transportation department and later promoted to Director of Transportation, a job he truly loved. He retired in 1996.
In retirement, Lou was able to pursue many interests. He and Cindy enjoyed many happy times traveling to Maui, Europe. Mexico, and back to New Jersey to visit family. She taught him how to play golf and encouraged him to take up playing the saxophone. He joined the Northern Colorado New Horizons Band for 16 years and met many wonderful friends there. He volunteered at his church and assisted senior citizens with filing their taxes. Other interests were reading books, movies, model trains, and walking his dogs around the neighborhood. We will miss his kind, gentle soul. He was loved by many. His favorite thing was being with his family and friends.
Lou is survived by his wife Cindy, dog Lucy, children Louis MacDonald Jr., Carol Jean Vogan (Jeff), Chris Ann Velasco (Bob), Darren MacDonald, and David MacDonald, sister Adele Diana, and brother Alex MacDonald.
