Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Henchey, age 75, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in Fort Collins, Colorado. She was known to her family as Kathleen, to her kids (and their friends) as mom, to her granddaughters as Grandma, her friends as Kathy, and her counselors and campers as Winky.
Kathy was born May 16, 1950, to Richard and Berenice Henchey, who preceded her in death. She was raised in Louisville, KY an only child, but surrounded by her cousins who were almost as close as siblings. Kathy attended Assumption High School before moving on to Eastern Kentucky University. She was formerly married to Gerald Rahn, and together they had three children: Nancye, Katie, and Chris Rahn, as well as two granddaughters, Trinity and Annie Rahn, all of whom survive her.
A dedicated and compassionate leader, Kathy devoted her career to outdoor recreation and youth development, serving many years in different roles, including camp director, in Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and Utah. Her passion for the outdoors and belief in the transformative power of nature and community shaped the lives of countless young people, particularly through her decades-long involvement with the Girl Scouts.
A quiet adventurer at heart, Kathy found joy in travel, especially when shared with her beloved children. She visited her fiftieth state in 2015 when she went to Alaska with her daughters. Grandma Kathy also enjoyed baking cookies and other activities with her granddaughters Trinity and Annie. Her warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched everyone who knew her.
A memorial service will be held in Louisville, Kentucky at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana at https://www.gskentuckiana.org/en/support-us/donate.html, honoring Kathy’s lifelong dedication to empowering young women.
