Penny was born November 23, 1949, in Rawlins, Wyoming, to George and Shirley Parsons. She is survived by her two daughters, Julia Ertelt, and her husband Steven, of Windsor, Colorado, and Melissa Vorhies of Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as her two beloved grandsons, Noah Rogers and Andrew Ertelt.
Penny was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend. Known for her strength, determination, and sharp wit, she lived a life of resilience and courage. Despite enduring a devastating automobile accident at the age of 17 that left her severely injured and in a coma, Penny never allowed that tragedy to define her. Defying all odds, she relearned to walk and talk, graduating from Rawlins High School in 1969 to a standing ovation. Penny later took college classes, raised two daughters, and became an active and loving grandmother. Her greatest joy in life was being a mom, and she was the best, as her daughters will lovingly attest.
Penny’s ability to face adversity with humor and grace was nothing short of heroic. Though many viewed her life as tragic, Penny considered herself blessed. She often said she wouldn’t have changed a thing, because her accident ultimately led to the family she cherished. She taught her daughters to laugh through heartache and to make the best of any situation, and her sense of humor and infectious laugh were unmatched.
Penny’s zest for life was evident in her many hobbies. When she was younger, she enjoyed snow skiing and snowmobiling. She was also Denver Broncos fan. She loved reading mystery novels, finding joy in the suspense. Penny also excelled at crafts, especially crocheting, where she won multiple awards, including a second-place ribbon at the Carbon County Fair in the 1970s. Every member of her family cherishes an afghan or beanie lovingly crafted by her hands.
Penny was also a devoted Christian with a strong faith. She spent many years speaking for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, traveling across Wyoming to share her story and advocate for safe driving. Her work earned her numerous awards and even special recognition from President Ronald Reagan. Penny’s legacy is one of strength, resilience, and an unwavering spirit.
Her love, strength, sense of humor and quick wit will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
