Peter Albert Gomm

Peter was born in Southall, England, the only child of Albert and Gladys. After finishing school at Southall Tech, he started an apprenticeship at AEC Limited and was working there when he married Beryl Griggs in March 1953 to whom he was happily married for 60 years.

Peter entered National Service in June 1953 serving in the Royal Air Force for three years. Upon fulfilling his military commitment, Peter joined Hoffman Manufacturing in Chelmsford, UK before hiring on with Woodward Governor Company (now Woodward Inc.) in 1959. He first worked in their UK office before moving to Fort Collins in 1970 to be “Americanized”. He subsequently ran their Japan and Dutch operations before moving to oversee international operations first in Fort Collins and then in Rockford, Illinois. He retired from Woodwards in 1996.

Peter loved his work but enjoyed his retirement even more. Peter and Beryl remained in Rockford after retirement with much time spent gardening, traveling, and visiting family. Peter continued to sing in the church choir and play the trombone, both pursuits with which he had been involved since his early days growing up in the Salvation Army. Peter and Beryl moved back to Fort Collins in 2002 where their daughter and family also moved, decisions made completely independently. Peter got to watch his two grandsons grow up and mature into young men and that gave him a great deal of satisfaction. Peter also traveled regularly to Canada to meet up with his son, wife and daughter. Peter continued to sing in the church choir and play his trombone in both a Dixieland band (The Stover Street Stompers) and a trombone quartet well into his late 80s. Peter was blessed with great health for almost his whole life, enabling him to make the most of his 92 years.

Surviving Peter are his children, Ian (Nancy) of Langley, Canada, Susan (Tim) of Fort Collins, grandchildren Stephanie (Ben) of Saint John, Canada, David (Madison) of Marseille, France and Philip (Gretchen) of Larkspur, CO and his first Great-Grandson, Peter of Saint John, Canada.

A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodist Church, in Fort Collins on Friday, August 4, 2023, at 11:00am.
