                                                                   Remembering Fred MolinaI had the wonderful opportunity to work and be friends with Fred Molina for 21 years. Always admired Fred because he had a lovely lady by his side and a wonderfully close family which he talked about often.Never had to guess what Fred was thinking, he was never one for locker room gossip or for talking behind ones back.  If Fred had a problem or did not like something he let you know to your face, I always respected for that trait  When Fred was my partner on patrol I knew I could count on him for back up which happened several times.  If we went down to the ground Fred and I went down together.During one event at the university center, Fred and I were escorting an irate intoxicated man out of the pub.  As we got to the pub door the guy stopped, turned around and drew his fist back as if he was going to strike me in the face. I started to block his punch and all of a sudden all I saw was a large blue flash in front of my eyes, as if a train car flew by me at a high rate of speed. The next thing I heard was get off me I will calm down! As I looked down, Fred was on top of him and I heard Fred yell, "No body hits my sergeant". Fred had tackled him and taken him to the ground before I blinked.I went to visit Fred after his diagnosis and tell him I loved him like a brother. Also, wanted to let him know I will forever be sorry for accidentally pepper spraying him while working together at the University Stadium. That evening a lot of fans were drinking heavily at the soccer game. The crowd was starting to get rowdy and loud. One young man did something to upset an older intoxicated guy in the stands, so the older man became so outraged and he decided to exit his seat and go down and confront young man 3 rows below him. The older drunk man left his seat and started walking down the aisle and I stepped in behind him. As I touched him on his left shoulder and said police stop, he turned around and drew his right hand back like he was going to punch me in the face. I stepped back, put my left hand up to block his punch and drew out my pepper spray with my right hand, again I told him to stop, however his right fist started forward so I pepper sprayed him in the center of his face. At that exact moment Fred Molina grabbed his right arm to stop him and I remember seeing the pepper spray hit the right side of the guys nose, make a sharp 45 degree turn and hit Fred fully in the face. Even though Fred got a full shot of pepper spray to the face he never let go of the man's arm until we had him on the ground and handcuffed. Fred said, thanks Jones, this stuff burns like hell, now I have to go flush my face for 20 minutes. I said sorry Fred I did not even see you, I was focused on blocking the guys fist.We will miss Fred, but his wonderful memories will always be with us.With heartfelt condolences.Tom and Joyce Jones, Fullerton California
