Cleveland McDonald Sargeant passed away peacefully in Corona, California, on September 13, 2024. Born on March 25, 1944, in Georgetown, Guyana, he was the eldest of seven children, raised in a close-knit family by his parents, Susan and Donald Sargeant (both deceased), alongside his six siblings: Joycelyn, Faye (deceased), Brenda, Nesta, Basil (Teddy, deceased), and James (deceased). Throughout his life, Cleveland exemplified a strong work ethic, compassion for others, and an unwavering dedication to enjoying his life.
As a young adult in Guyana, he began his career teaching at St. Phillips Anglican School before exploring various professions. He worked as a lawyer’s clerk with J.O.F. Haynes, at the Guyana Rice Marketing Board, and six years with Demerara Bauxite Company.
In 1970, Cleveland migrated to the United States, where he continued to advance his education and career. He proudly served six years in the U.S. Armed Services, later earning degrees in Business Administration and Accounting, along with certification as a Tax Practitioner. A large portion of his career was spent in service at the California Department of Motor Vehicles until his retirement. While serving in management at the DMV, Cleveland also worked as a tax preparer and election poll worker, and even in retirement, he remained active with his love for tools, helping others achieve their DIY dreams at The Home Depot as well as assisting with a friend’s upholstery business. Cleveland's journey took him from New York to Connecticut, and ultimately to his beloved California, where he resided until his “final bell rang.”
Cleveland is survived by three sisters—Joycelyn, Brenda, and Nesta—and thirteen children: Rosamond, Colleen, Colette, Charmaine (Liza), Sharon, Susan, Tracey, Sean, Troydon (Troy), Walt, Delroy (Lee), Charlene, and Cassandra (As Guyanese would say, “He was a true ‘sweet boy!’”). Cleveland also leaves behind 27 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews.
Cleveland was well-known for his intelligence, resourcefulness, organization, humor, charm, and vibrant personality—the true “Life of the Party.” Although his relationship with his children was often marked by distance, his love for them remained steadfast. They brought him immense pride and joy, along with his nieces and nephews. Cleveland had a remarkable ability to recall the finer details of their lives, making each person feel cherished and valued in his presence. Despite the physical separation, his spirit continues to resonate deeply within the hearts of his loved ones.
A memorial service for Cleveland will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 11:00 AM at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary, 902 N. Harbor Blvd, Fullerton, CA.
