
Elsie Whalen passed away May 23, 2013 in Carlsbad at the age of 94. She was born in Yonkers, New York June 20, 1918. She graduated from Cornell University in 1939 and worked at the Framingham Mass. women's reformatory as head of the children's nursery. She met and married William Whalen 1943. They moved to the West coast and raised three children in Buena Park and Placentia. In 1961 she began a 25 year career as a Social Worker for Orange County. She was an expert quilter and continued quilting when she moved to Rancho Carlsbad after Bill Whalen's death. There she belonged to many clubs and enjoyed being near her family. The last two years of her life she lived in Las Villas De Carlsbad, an assisted living facility. She is survived by her son Steve Whalen, daughter in law LaDonna, daughter Gayle Tinnerstet, son-in law Larry Tinnerstet, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Private family services were held at Olive lawn cemetery in La Mirada. She is buried between her husband and son who died in 1960. She will always be remembered for her kindness and loving, devotion to her family.
