Emily Terrell Baker

Emily Louise Terrell was born on December 4, 1938, in Boca Raton, Florida to Frank and Ammie Terrell. She spent her early years between Florida and Georgia, growing up primarily in Opa Locka while cherishing summers on her grandmother's farm in Gray, Georgia. Emily accepted Christ at an early age and remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life.

Emily graduated from Miami Northwestern Senior High School in 1957 before pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming an educator. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1963 from Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee. Teaching was far more than a profession to Emily—it was her calling from an early age.

After graduation, Emily accepted her first teaching position in Chicago, Illinois. However, after enduring one very chilly winter, she quickly realized the Midwest was not where she wanted to build her career. She relocated to Los Angeles, California, and never left. It was there she began what would become a distinguished 36-year career with the Los Angeles Unified School District, which ended at West Athens Elementary School. During her years there she served as a Reading Specialist, and taught students from preschool through fifth grade. She then earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University in 1978, and later became a Special Education Instructor. Throughout her career, she inspired countless students with her patience, compassion, and unwavering dedication before retiring in 2001.

In 1963, Emily met and married Roy C. Baker. Together they built a loving home and welcomed their daughter, Stephanie followed by their son, Eric. While she found great fulfillment in her profession, Emily's greatest joy was always her family.

For more than 40 years, Emily was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church. She joyfully served her church family as a member of the Silver Eagles and the Deaconess Board. Her unwavering faith, servant's heart, and quiet strength touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

On Sunday, July 12, 2026, Emily peacefully entered eternal rest at Providence St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange, California.

Emily leaves behind to cherish her memory two sisters: Essie Clemons and Frankie Simmons; one daughter, Stephanie Baker; one son, Eric Baker (Antionette); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Emily was deeply loved, will be forever remembered, and is already truly missed.

A viewing will be 10:00 am with service at 11 AM Wednesday, July 22 held at Friendship Baptist Church, 17145 Bastanchury Rd, Yorba Linda, CA 92886.

A committal service will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3888 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, CA 90601 on July 28, 2026, at 10:00 am.
