Harry Aloysius Whalen was surrounded by his loving family when he peacefully passed away at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, CA.
Harry was born in Los Angeles at Queen of Angels Hospital as the only child of Harry Sr. and Grace (Heil) Whalen. He grew up with fond memories of living in the city, riding streetcars and cheering on his favorite football team with friends. Harry was deeply rooted in his Catholic faith and pursued a calling to join the priesthood. Eventually, Harry would take a different path when he met the love of his life, Mary Broderick of Montebello. He also served in the United States Navy. While stationed on a small island in the South Pacific, he wrote love letters to his soon-to-be wife, letters she kept after all these years.
Harry and Mary were married in 1954 and selflessly raised 10 children at their home in Whittier Harry worked tirelessly to provide for his family, sometimes working two jobs, amid supporting the St. Bruno’s parish and local Scouting Council. Harry’s greatest love was his family. He cherished family outings, camping trips, and especially holiday parties, where his growing family would converge at “Mom and Dad’s house” for lasting memories for all to treasure.
Harry was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary, and is survived by a large and very close family: Tom (Terri), Bob (Karen), Jim (Lisa), Cathy (Larry), John (Karri), Mike (Beth), Rich (Christy), Tim (Suzy), Laura (Bryan), and Patty (Dana), as well as 23 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A viewing followed by a funeral mass will be held at 10 am on May 31st at St. Bruno’s Catholic Church in Whittier, CA.
