Julian was born October 23, 1931 in Madera, California. Dad lived in the Central Valley, in farming communities around Merced and Bakersfield. He lived with his grandmother in Cayucos, California in his teen years. He graduated from Lemoore High School in 1948. After High School, Julian attended College at the University of California Berkeley, studying Electronic Engineering. He graduated Cum Laude, excited about the future of the engineering industry. He was hired before graduation by Hughes Aircraft Company where he worked for more than 30 years. One of his first assignments was to help design the radar systems for the USS Enterprise, the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Hughes gave Dad an outlet for his intelligence and provided a way for him to support the safety of the United States. Some projects that eventually were declassified included a fishing boat that had a 1 mile microphone listening for Russian submarines off the California Coast.
On vacation in Cape Cod in 1956 he met his future wife Frances Giambalvo. They were married in 1957 and moved to Fullerton, California.
Julian and Fran had three children who attended St. Juliana’s School and Church. This was the foundation of his lifelong friends who shared birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and eventually funerals.
After the children were grown, Dad used one old bedroom as a computer room. He wrote a math based computer program that created pie graphs and bar graphs based on data. He started a small business selling the program throughout the world. His wife Frances and son Kevin helped package the discs. He had a world map on the wall and all were excited to put a pin on a new location of the world. When the computer industry took off, he decided to close the business because large corporations had many employees to do the work that Dad was doing on his own.
Julian and Mom loved the great outdoors and took the family camping each year to visit National Parks and forests. He instilled an appreciation of nature to his children and grandchildren. As Dad and Mom got older and had grandchildren, they visited Yosemite National Park with his son Steven and family annually.
Julian’s adult children and grandchildren became the joy of his life. He was excited to see TJ join the US Airforce and for Alexander to attend a Fire Academy. Dad was pleased to see Jaimeson graduate from UC Irvine, for Preston to start a business, and for Cooper to begin his life after college. Dad enjoyed his annual trips to Yosemite with grandson Anthony. After Mom died in 2016, Julian’s son Kevin saw Dad weekly and Dad relished the visits and the pictures of Kevin and his family on their various surfing trips and other outdoor adventures.
Julian is survived by his three children: Stephen (a college professor), Kevin (a business owner), Susan (an Attorney) and his 6 grandsons: TJ, Alexander, Jaimeson, Preston, Cooper, and Anthony. And his great grandchildren Reagan, Liam and Tenly.
Please join us for a funeral mass at St. Juliana’s Church at 10:00 a.m. on April 17, 2019 at 1320 North Acacia Ave in Fullerton, CA 92831 to reminisce, grieve, and honor Julian.
