Noemi Alonso

Noemí Espinosa Arencibia was born on January 6, 1930 (Día de Los Reyes), in Matanzas, Cuba. She was the fifth child of seven born to Antonio Espinosa Hernandez and Blanca Arencibia Milian. Noemi graduated from the teacher's college in Matanzas in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts in education. Since there were no teaching opportunities after graduating, she worked at the electrical company as an Administrative Secretary. While there she met her husband, Manuel Alonso, and after a short courtship they were married on November 16, 1954. Their happy marriage was completed with the arrival of their daughters, Esther Maria born on October 29, 1958 and Sylvia Noemi, born on January 14, 1960. After Fidel Castro came into power in 1959, Manuel and Noemi knew they did not want to live in Cuba any longer and made arrangements to leave the country. Initially, they purchased plane tickets, but as their departure date neared they feared that their Visas would not arrive on time. They exchanged tickets with another family that was scheduled to leave at a later date. Their Visas arrived, but due to the Cuban Missile Crisis all flights leaving Cuba were canceled and the family was not able to leave the country. Finally, on July 3, 1963, the family boarded the last freighter that had been sent to Cuba with medical supplies in exchange for Bay of Pigs refugees and families who had been granted freedom by the government. With one suitcase containing three changes of clothes for each family member, which is all the Cuban government allowed those leaving the country to bring with them, Noemi and her family set off for their new life in the United States. The family stayed in Miami for a few weeks, but after Manuel was unable to find employment they left for California where Noemi's sister and her family lived. After moving a few times, they settled in Fullerton California. In 1966 Noemi started work at Alex Tamales, and soon after began working at Tekform. They received their American citizenship on January 13, 1971. On February 20, 1975, Noemi lost Manuel to cancer. Noemi would never remarry, choosing to focus on raising her two daughters on her own. Her family was always her priority, and she was a loving and caring mother. After the layoffs at Tekform in 1991, Noemi worked as a teacher's aide until retiring in 1997. In April 2012, Noemi was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. After her surgery, she decided not to have any other treatment. She was with us another 6 year before she passed away on April 24, 2018. Noemi is survived by her daughters, Esther and Sylvia, her son-in-law Duane, her grandchildren, Lanae and Nathan, her siblings Esther, Moises, Samuel, and Raquel. Noemi will be remembered for her dedication to those she loved, and her devotion to her faith. She was a woman who never let life's challenges deter her from her path. She is deeply missed, but her strength, her resilience, and compassion live on. For now she rests in peace, and we look forward to the glorious resurrection day when we will see her again. Noemí se graduó de la escuela para maestros en Matanzas, Cuba en 1953 con una licenciatura en educación. Puesto que no había ninguna oportunidad de enseñar después de graduarse, ella trabajó en la compañía eléctrica como secretaria administrativa. Allí es donde conoció a su marido, Manuel Alonso. Inicialmente ellos compraron boletos de avión, pero al ver que la fecha de salida se acercaba, temían que sus Visas no llegarían a tiempo. Intercambiaron los boletos con otra familia que estaba programado para salir en una fecha posterior. Al fin, la familia abordó el ultimo barco carguero que había sido enviado a Cuba con suministros médicos a cambio de los refugiados de la Bahía de Cochinos y las familias que se les habían concedido la libertad por el gobierno. Con solo una maleta que contenía tres cambios de ropa para cada miembro de la familia, que es todo lo que permitió el gobierno que se llevaran del país, Noemí y su familia partieron para su nueva vida en los Estados Unidos. La familia se quedó en Miami por unas semanas, pero después que Manuel no pudo encontrar empleo, se fueron a California donde vivía la hermana de Noemí y su familia.  Después de trasladarse varias veces, la familia se instaló en Fullerton, California. En 1966, Noemí empezó a trabajar en Alex Tamales, y poco después comenzó a trabajar en Tekform. Ellos recibieron su ciudadanía estadounidense el 13 de enero de 1971. El 20 de febrero de 1975 Noemí perdió a Manuel al cáncer. Noemí nunca volvería a casarse, eligiendo centrarse en criar a sus dos hijas sola. Su familia siempre fue su prioridad, y ella era una madre llena de amor y cariño. Después de perder su trabajo en Tekform en 1991, Noemí trabajó como ayudante de maestro hasta que se jubiló en 1997. En abril de 2012, Noemí fue diagnosticada con cáncer de esófago. Después de la cirugía, ella decidió no tener ningún otro tratamiento. Ella estuvo con nosotros seis años hasta que murió el 24 de abril de 2018. Noemí es sobrevivida por sus hijas, Esther y Sylvia, su yerno Duane, sus nietos Lanae y Nathan, sus hermanos Esther, Moisés, Samuel, y Raquel. Noemí será recordada por su dedicación a los que amaba y su devoción a su fe. Ella era una mujer que nunca dejó que los desafíos de la vida le disuaden de su camino. La extrañamos profundamente, pero su fuerza, su resiliencia, y la compasión perdurarán.   Por ahora ella descansa en paz, y esperamos al glorioso día de resurrección cuando la veremos de nuevo.
